Tokyo Metro Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Taito-ku, Tokyo; President: Akihiko Kosaka; hereinafter referred to as "Tokyo Metro") will begin displaying real-time congestion status by car on displays installed within stations at Minowa Station and Iriya Station on the Hibiya Line, and Minamisuna Station, Kasai Station, and Urayasu Station on the Tozai Line, which are included in congested sections for trains bound for Nakameguro on the Hibiya Line and for Nakano on the Tozai Line. This initiative, aimed at promoting congestion leveling, will commence on Monday, March 30, 2026.
Based on real-time measured congestion information for each car, obtained using depth cameras and AI, the displays will show "the actual congestion of arriving trains" and "congestion predictions for each station after boarding." By allowing passengers to grasp the congestion predictions and actual congestion immediately before boarding a train, especially those using trains bound for Nakameguro on the Hibiya Line and for Nakano on the Tozai Line during morning rush hours, it will be possible to select and board the most suitable car and train for themselves according to the congestion situation at that time.
This initiative is being undertaken based on the findings from demonstration experiments conducted at Waseda Station on the Tozai Line in FY2022 and Aoyama-itchome Station on the Hanzomon Line in FY2023, which showed a certain effect in encouraging movement to less crowded cars by providing real-time congestion information.
Tokyo Metro is the only railway operator to have introduced a train congestion measurement system using depth cameras and AI, and this system is utilized for providing congestion information on the Tokyo Metro my! app and as basic data for timetable development. It also received a Special Award at the 21st Japan Railway Awards in September 2022.
Going forward, Tokyo Metro will continue to promote initiatives for congestion leveling to ensure that customers can use the subway with greater peace of mind and comfort.
