As environmental awareness in corporate activities increases, the proper disposal of office waste has become an important management issue from the perspective of compliance. On the other hand, in offices where different types of waste such as documents, OA equipment, and office furniture are mixed together, it is not uncommon for personnel in charge to be in a situation where they "do not know where to start," from selecting disposal methods and choosing contractors to grasping the market price of costs.
Therefore, we conducted a quantitative survey of 221 company employees nationwide who have experience in disposing of office waste at their workplaces, aiming to understand the types of items disposed of, problems during disposal, important points to consider, and expectations for specialized contractors.
*This survey was conducted with the cooperation of Michi Co., Ltd.
■ Documents and office furniture are the top disposal targets; nearly 40% have experience with OA equipment and waste materials
When asked in a multiple-choice format about the items they have disposed of, "documents" were the most common at 127 cases (57.5%), followed by "office furniture" at 116 cases (52.5%), showing that more than half of the personnel have experienced this. This was followed by "OA equipment" at 81 cases (36.7%) and "waste materials" at 71 cases (32.1%), highlighting the diversity of waste generated in offices.
In the free descriptions for "Other" (26 cases), there were also experiences dealing with special waste requiring specialized knowledge, such as "CD/DVD/HDD data documents," "karaoke equipment (laser disc type)," and "old ultra-large monitors."
■ The biggest challenge during disposal is "anxiety about information leakage"; opacity of costs and methods also a challenge
Regarding problems during disposal, "worried about information leakage" topped the list at 20.8%. This was followed by "don't know where to request" (19.9%) and "don't know the market price of costs" (17.2%), painting a picture of personnel in a situation where they "don't know what they don't know."
"Don't know the separation rules" (15.8%) and "anxious about proper processing" (14.0%) were also high, making the lack of information regarding disposal an overall challenge.
■ "Bulk collection" and "legal compliance" are emphasized; peace of mind and convenience prioritized over price
Regarding what is emphasized during disposal, "collecting everything together" was the most common at 28.5%.
"Legal compliance" (27.1%) followed closely, revealing that personnel prioritize reliability and convenience over mere cheapness. Although "price" (23.1%) also ranked high, it remained in 3rd place.
■ Expectations for specialized contractors are "legal compliance" and "easy-to-understand information provision"; speed and price are also demanded
When asked in free descriptions about their expectations for specialized contractors, voices demanding legal compliance and proper processing accounted for the majority.
Requests for reliable systems and transparency were prominent, such as "I want them to present disposal rules and necessary documents in an easy-to-understand manner so we can request them with peace of mind," and "I want them to clearly show measures against information leakage and proof of legal compliance."
In addition, many expectations regarding convenience and cost were received, such as "Speed to come on the same day or the next day after contacting," and "I expect them to dispose of it as speedily and cheaply as possible."
▼ Main free answers (excerpts from original text)
- "Responding conscientiously in various situations, and having clear separation rules"
- "When disposing of documents, it is an absolute condition that there is no leakage of information including personal information, so I expect legal compliance and proper processing."
- "Building a system where we can request with peace of mind by presenting guidance on disposal rules and necessary documents in an easy-to-understand manner. It would be reassuring if they clearly show measures against information leakage and proof of legal compliance."
- "I want to expect the speed of coming on the same day or the next day after contacting."
- "First of all, I want to ask a specialized contractor with an awareness of legal compliance. I expect specialized contractors to dispose of things as speedily and cheaply as possible while strictly observing the law."
■ Consideration and Summary
From this survey, it was found that the challenges faced by personnel when disposing of unnecessary items in the workplace are summarized as "lack of information and knowledge" and "difficulty in selecting a reliable contractor." Even for familiar waste such as documents and office furniture, the awareness of information leakage risks and legal compliance is very high, and there is a strong demand for "proof of legal compliance" and "easy-to-understand information provision" from the contractors commissioned for disposal.
It is also noteworthy that "collecting everything together" became the top priority. In office workplaces where different types of waste are mixed, the demand for contractors who can handle it in a one-stop manner is high, which can be a point of differentiation for specialized contractors. It can be said that we have entered an era where choices are made based on "reliability, transparency, and convenience" rather than price competition.
