Against the backdrop of the 2024 problem and chronic labor shortages in the construction industry, the workload of construction managers is becoming more serious year by year. There are many voices saying that construction managers, who should be responsible for "core tasks" such as schedule management, safety management, and quality management, are spending time on a wide variety of "peripheral tasks" such as organizing and tidying up the site, dealing with leftover materials, and responding to sudden troubles, which leads to a decline in site productivity.

Therefore, we quantitatively grasped the types of peripheral tasks, the sense of burden, the impact on the site, and the need for outsourcing by targeting 46 people engaged in construction management.

■93.4% of construction managers feel that there are "many" peripheral tasks - About 20% "strongly agree"
When asked whether they feel there are many peripheral tasks other than core tasks in construction management, 21.7% answered "strongly agree" and 71.7% answered "somewhat agree", revealing that a total of 93.4% feel the abundance of peripheral tasks.

There were 0 responses of "do not agree at all", and it can be said that the abundance of peripheral tasks at the site is a problem felt by almost everyone.

■"Organizing and tidying up the site" and "Coordination with partner companies" are the top 2 peripheral tasks - Miscellaneous tasks other than site management are widespread
In "Tasks felt to be peripheral tasks (multiple choices)", "Organizing and tidying up the site and confirming cleanup" was the most common with 24 responses.

Next, "Detailed coordination with partner companies" was 22, "Dealing with leftover materials and unnecessary items" was 20, and "Management of material storage areas" and "Sudden site response" followed with 19 each, indicating that a wide range of tasks from physical management of the site to human coordination are recognized as peripheral tasks.

■86.9% feel that peripheral tasks are "pressuring" core tasks - About 1 in 4 say it is "common"
When asked if peripheral tasks sometimes pressure core tasks such as schedule management and safety management, 23.9% said "often" and 63.0% said "sometimes", revealing that a total of 86.9% feel an impact on core tasks.
