This album stands apart from Seu Jorge's previous solo works, which focused on soul and samba. Produced over 16 years, it unfolds a celebration of Brazilian music, centered on jazz and bossa nova, adorned with sophisticated orchestral arrangements.
The encounter between Brazilian soul and sophisticated orchestral sounds was sparked by Mario Caldato Jr. (Beastie Boys, Jack Johnson), a long-time friend and revered legendary producer. However, their bond of trust goes back even further.
"It's rare to meet someone with such vibrant, powerful vocals and talent as Seu Jorge. I felt that when I met him in Los Angeles in 1999," Caldato recalls.
"Since then, our friendship and mutual respect have only deepened. Thanks to that, we've been able to make music freely together."
The genesis of the new album 'The Other Side' was born from a pure spark of sensibility.
"This album came about when Jorge was playing and recording Cane And Able's 'Girl You Move Me' with a simple arrangement on a nylon-string guitar. His performance was incredibly delicate yet dynamic, and I was deeply moved," says Caldato, who produced the album.
It was then that Caldato thought of inviting multi-instrumentalist and arranger Miguel Atwood-Ferguson to add orchestral arrangements for the demo. That collaboration began in 2009 and gradually blossomed.
"When I shared some ideas with Miguel, he understood them perfectly and created beautiful arrangements that elevated the songs to a more gorgeous and sophisticated dimension. That experience was the catalyst for this orchestral project adventure."
With his characteristic deep and smooth voice, Seu Jorge revives numerous MPB classics. He drew inspiration from works by the German label ECM Records and arrangements by conductor Claus Ogerman, who collaborated with Tom Jobim and João Gilberto.
Recorded incrementally between 2009 and 2018, this album is the crystallization of a true musician's craftsmanship, born in a mood of tranquility and friendship. The vibrant rhythmic foundation is provided by Seu Jorge's band.
"Jorge deeply trusts and is proud of his musicians, allowing them to express themselves freely. Each one brings a special flavor to each song, making this their album too," says Caldato.
"It was truly a joyful week for me, and for all of us, to be able to record and capture that magical spirit and atmosphere," Caldato adds. As a producer, he watched the work come to fruition with arrangements by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson.
"During the mixing stage, everything felt very natural. The album naturally revealed itself and presented a magnificent coherence. For me, this is a timeless album."
The album includes covers of songs such as Milton Nascimento's "Crença" (from his 1967 debut album), Arthur Verocai's "Caboclo" (a psychedelic guitar version), and of course, "Girl You Move Me" by the Canadian band Cane And Able, which was the inspiration for this project.
Among the tracks featuring guest artists, Márcio Borges' "Vento De Maio" (a hit by Lô Borges & Elis Regina) is performed as a passionate duet with Maria Rita. Another major collaboration is with Grammy-winning American singer Beck, a self-proclaimed fan of Brazilian music. The two sing "River Man" by the great British singer Nick Drake together. Also, "Quando Chego" is Seu—
