Telecom Square, Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Yuji Yoshitake), a global provider of cross-border mobile communication solutions, has begun a pilot program to introduce the self-service Wi-Fi rental "WiFiBOX" at 13 Lawson, Inc. (Headquarters: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President: Sadonobu Takemasu) stores in Tokyo. The service officially launched on July 1, 2026.
This pilot program focuses on stores located near train stations, business districts, and event venues to address sudden communication needs while out and about. We plan to consider expanding the installation based on usage trends to further enhance convenience.
"WiFiBOX" is a sharing service that allows users to pick up and return mobile Wi-Fi routers without human interaction. The routers come with charging cables, enabling smartphone charging as well. A key attraction is the affordable price of 840 yen (tax included) per day for the unlimited (speed-limited) plan in Japan.
"WiFiBOX" is available at approximately 700 locations nationwide (as of June 2026), and is used by many customers. This popularity stems from the convenience of picking up and returning the device at nearby stations or commercial facilities at one's own convenience. It is utilized in various communication scenarios, such as "data shortage" at the end of the month, remote meetings on the go, and by international tourists visiting Japan.
Background of this Installation
In recent years, with the widespread adoption of smartphones and the increasing use of video streaming services, online meetings, and digital tickets, communication environments have become indispensable not only in daily life but also in a wide range of situations including work, events, and entertainment. Meanwhile, convenience stores play a crucial role as living infrastructure, offering not only food and daily necessities but also services like utility bill payments.
Against this backdrop, WiFiBOX has been pilot-introduced at some Lawson stores as a communication service that can be easily used in various daily situations, such as "data shortage at the end of the month," "sudden remote meetings," "watching data-intensive videos," and "displaying digital tickets at event venues." By establishing an environment where Wi-Fi routers can be picked up and returned at familiar locations such as near one's home station, office, or on the way to an event venue, we aim to improve customer convenience by responding to situations where a stable communication environment is suddenly needed.
We will consider expanding the installation at Lawson stores based on the results of this demonstration experiment.
