Telecom Square Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Yuji Yoshitake; hereinafter "the company"), a global provider of cross-border mobile communication solutions, will begin piloting its self-service Wi-Fi rental service "WiFiBOX" at 29 FamilyMart stores starting Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

This pilot program will install WiFiBOX units primarily in stores located near train stations and commercial districts where demand is expected, enabling immediate access to communication services for urgent needs or while traveling. Based on usage data and customer feedback, the company plans to consider expanding the number of installation locations.

WiFiBOX is a sharing-type service that allows users to rent mobile Wi-Fi routers easily and contactlessly on the same day. The routers come with built-in charging cables, enabling smartphone charging as well. For unlimited domestic data plans in Japan (with speed throttling), the service is priced affordably at 840 yen per day (tax included), making it an attractive option.

One key reason for WiFiBOX's popularity is the ability to pick up and return devices at nearby stations or commercial facilities at users’ convenience. It is widely used in various scenarios such as last-minute data shortages at month-end, remote meetings while traveling, and by inbound tourists visiting Japan.

Background of the Installation

In recent years, the widespread adoption of smartphones, video streaming, online meetings, and cloud services has made reliable connectivity essential not only in daily life but also in work, education, and entertainment. At the same time, convenience stores have become deeply integrated into everyday life, serving not only as places to purchase food and daily necessities but also as hubs for paying public utilities and accessing various services—effectively functioning as vital social infrastructure.

Given this context, WiFiBOX has been introduced on a trial basis at select FamilyMart stores to serve as a convenient communication solution for everyday situations such as month-end data shortages, sudden remote meetings, or high-data-usage video streaming. By enabling users to pick up and return Wi-Fi routers at accessible locations near stations and commercial areas, the service aims to improve customer convenience during urgent connectivity needs.

Furthermore, the company will evaluate usage patterns and customer feedback from this initiative to consider future expansions, including increasing the number of installation sites and enhancing the service.
