General Incorporated Association tatamama (Headquarters: Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Representative Director: Chie Ushijima) is pleased to announce that its registered supporters reached 100 in March 2026.

Starting with 17 members in fiscal year 2023, tatamama supporters have expanded into a support system centered on users, collaborating with professionals in fields such as medicine and education. Currently, 36 individuals with qualifications in the medical and education fields are participating, establishing a system to continuously support multiple birth families from pregnancy through the childcare period.

"Structural Isolation" Faced by Multiple Birth Families

Multiple birth parenting, such as for twins or triplets, involves:

  • Increased physical risks during pregnancy

  • Simultaneous onset of childcare burdens post-birth

  • Physical difficulties with going out and attending medical appointments

  • Lack of support for siblings

and other burden structures different from single births.

On the other hand, many of Japan's childcare support systems are designed with single births as the standard, and there is currently a regional disparity in support for multiple birth families.

As a result, many families feel isolated even during pregnancy.

Phased Support Model by Users x Professionals

The 100 tatamama supporters, composed mainly of individuals with experience in multiple birth parenting, are companions for multiple birth families who tend to become isolated in their communities.

They primarily support the operation of tatamama's regularly held multiple birth exchange meetings, fostering a safe space for multiple birth families to connect.

Among them, 33 individuals who have completed the prescribed training course are active as "tatamama Peer Supporters."

As providers of accompanying support from pregnancy to postpartum, they are being trained to become key personnel for home-visit support in the future.

Currently, among the 100 registered supporters, the following 36 are qualified professionals:

<Medical and Welfare Professionals>

  • Doctors, midwives, public health nurses, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, and other medical professionals: 21 individuals

  • Social workers, psychiatric social workers

<Education and Childcare Professionals>

  • Kindergarten teachers, nursery school teachers, general teachers, developmental support educators: 15 individuals

Furthermore, among the board members, there is 1 doctor, 1 nurse, 1 nursery school teacher, 1 medical childcare worker, and 1 registered dietitian, ensuring expertise at the operational level as well.

Expansion of Medical Collaboration

Last year, 4 medical professionals belonging to a local visiting nursing center participated in a training program based on the content of the tatamama Peer Supporter training course.

New collaborative models connecting medical care and community support are also emerging.

From Demonstration to Administrative Undertaking

Since fiscal year 2024, tatamama has been exploring ways to provide support from pregnancy to postpartum and has independently conducted a peer support monitor project.

Users have provided feedback such as:

"I didn't have to bear everything alone."

"I felt reassured knowing someone was by my side."

Based on these achievements, from January 2026, tatamama began participating as a contracted service provider in Fukutsu City's "Multiple Birth Pregnant and Postpartum Supporter Dispatch Project."

In its role of providing supportive services for multiple birth families under the administrative system, tatamama aims to expand its continuous support framework from pregnancy to postpartum by further strengthening collaboration with the community and government.

Social Issues in Multiple Birth Parenting

Multiple pregnancies and multiple birth parenting face issues such as:

  • Physical risks during pregnancy and childbirth

  • Concentrated childcare burdens postpartum

  • Difficulties with going out and attending medical appointments

and a general tendency to experience complex burdens compared to single births.

However, systems that provide continuous support from pregnancy through the childcare period are not yet sufficient nationwide.

tatamama aims to build a replicable support model in the community, starting with the voices of those directly involved.

Message from the Representative

Chie Ushijima, Representative Director, General Incorporated Association tatamama

The reaching of 100 supporters, starting with 17 members in fiscal year 2023, is a testament to the accumulated empathy and support for tatamama's activities.

While multiple birth parenting brings great joy, there is a reality where physical and mental burdens tend to accumulate from pregnancy through the postpartum period.

"Having someone with the same experience nearby" brings significant reassurance to multiple birth families.

Moving forward, we will continue to enhance the quality of our support, strengthen collaboration with government agencies and medical institutions, and aim to realize a society where multiple birth families do not face isolation.
