Actress, UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) Goodwill Ambassador. Born in Nogizaka, Tokyo.

Attended Tomoe Gakuen, then Koran Jogakko, and graduated from the Vocal Music Department of Tokyo University of the Arts.

Joined the NHK Broadcasting Troupe and became NHK's first exclusive TV actress.

Started the talk show "Tetsuko's Room" in 1976.

While appearing on television and radio, she established the Totto Foundation, focusing on training professional deaf actors, theatrical activities, and sign language classes. Her book "Totto-chan, the Little Girl at the Window" became an 8 million-copy bestseller.

Member of Japan P.E.N. Club. Director of Chihiro Art Museum (Tokyo/Azumino). Vice Chairman of Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Honorary President of Japan Panda Protection Association. Recipient of the Order of Culture in 2015.
