Challenging New Fashion Proposals to Experience Design Through "Touch" and "Hearing"

Fashion often heavily relies on visual elements. In a world with abundant visual information, we see the attempt to perceive the world using diverse senses without relying on sight as a challenge that creates new added value. To respond to the diversity of society as a department store, Takashimaya launched the "Fashion for ALL your SENSES" project, aiming to realize a society where everyone can enjoy fashion, including those with visual impairments, and started sales in April 2025.

This year, marking its second year, we welcome Kensuke Ishii, a blind communicator, as curator, and five apparel companies are participating and collaborating. Re-examining visually-biased fashion, we have gathered cut-and-sew items that allow design to be enjoyed through "touch" and "hearing," and will commence the POP UP SHOP. Through this project, Takashimaya will continue to challenge new fashion proposals this year.

Initiative ① Cut-and-sew items that allow you to feel design through onomatopoeia

Together with people with visual impairments, we challenged a new fashion proposal using "onomatopoeia" as a common language. For each cut-and-sew item, the sensations people feel are verbalized into six "onomatopoeia" such as Ukiuki (exciting), Kicchiri (neat), Kirakira (sparkling), Funwari (fluffy), Hinyari (chilly), and Sarasara (silky smooth). We pursued designs that allow people to share the invisible comfort, impression, and sensation, and enjoy them with "all senses," including touch.

This initiative aims to allow people to discover the charm and individuality of clothes without relying solely on visual information, and to enjoy fashion with all their senses.

In April 2016, he suddenly lost his sight overnight. In 2021, he began working as a blind communicator, acting as an intermediary connecting the visible and invisible worlds. He is involved in workshops, development/facilitation of corporate training programs, lectures, development of inclusive design products in collaboration with companies, and production of audio descriptions for films and stage plays. https://kensukeishii.com/

Initiative ② Cut-and-sew items that allow you to feel design through music (auditory senses)

As a new attempt to bring out the charm of clothes, we challenged an unprecedented fashion proposal using "music (auditory senses)" as a starting point. We aimed to expand the joy of feeling and choosing clothes through the experience of "listening," not just sight and touch, and to create a new sales floor.

Salon Adam et Rope, one of the brands endorsing this project, planned products by appointing two artists. Based on the artwork created by artist Lee Izumida, singer-songwriter RUNGHYANG composed music. Furthermore, that art design was incorporated into cut-and-sew items. By "visualizing and audibilizing" abstract graphics and images that cannot be fully expressed in words through the medium of "music," we propose a new experience of confronting the design itself. We pursued designs where everyone can sensuously enjoy art, music, and fashion.

Primarily creates acrylic paintings, and also draws pictures and letters used for signboards, advertising art, and windows.

RUNG HYANG

Born in Chikuhō, Fukuoka Prefecture, a third-generation Zainichi Korean, active primarily in soul and R&B. In parallel with her music activities, she is also involved in education, currently serving as a specially appointed professor at Osaka College of Music. In her independently run "RUNGHYANG Seminar," she is involved in nurturing and producing various artists, having launched numerous talents such as eill and Eito.
