Challenging New Fashion Proposals: Feeling Design Through 'Touch' and 'Hearing'
Fashion, in many cases, heavily relies on visual elements.
In a visually dominant world, attempting to grasp the world using diverse senses without relying solely on sight is seen as a challenge that creates new added value. To cater to social diversity as a department store, Takashimaya launched the 'Fashion for ALL your SENSES' project in the fashion sector, starting sales in April 2025. The project aims to realize a society where everyone, along with visually impaired individuals, can enjoy fashion.
Now entering its second year, the project welcomes a new curator, blind communicator Kensuke Ishii, with the participation and collaboration of five apparel companies. Questioning visually biased fashion, we have gathered cut-and-sews that allow you to enjoy design through 'touch' and 'hearing,' launching a POP UP SHOP. Through this project, Takashimaya continues to challenge new fashion proposals this year.
Initiative 1: Cut-and-Sews Where You Feel Design Through Onomatopoeia
Together with visually impaired individuals, we challenged a new fashion proposal using the common language of 'onomatopoeia' as a starting point. For each cut-and-sew, the sensations people feel are verbalized into six 'onomatopoeias'—such as uki-uki (excited/cheerful), kitchiri (neat), kira-kira (sparkling), funwari (fluffy), hinyari (cool), and sara-sara (smooth). We pursued designs that share invisible comfort, impressions, and feelings, allowing enjoyment through 'all senses,' including touch.
This is an initiative aimed at enjoying fashion with all senses, encountering the charm and individuality of clothes without relying solely on visual information.
