~Daishoji and the Yamanoshita Temple Group~
Daishoji is a small castle town where the Daishoji Domain, a branch domain of Kaga Hyakumangoku (one million koku), was established.
The Yamanoshita Temple Group, located in one corner, is a place where the Daishoji Domain intentionally gathered temples and shrines near the border with Echizen. Jodo Shinshu temples remained within the town, while other sects (Soto Zen, Nichiren, Jodo, etc.) were concentrated in this area.
Seven temples and one shrine are lined up: "Jisshoin," the family temple of the Maeda family of the Daishoji Domain; "Renkoji," which holds a star festival in January; "Kyuhouji," which houses the grave of Kakizawa Rihei, who first made pencils in Japan; "Zenshoji," associated with Basho; "Shogakuji," which has a rare Nyorai statue called Rikogyo Amida Nyorai; "Sojuji," whose main gate is the former barrier gate of the Daishoji Domain; "Honkoji," which contains the grave of Fukada Kyuya, an author from Daishoji known for "One Hundred Mountains of Japan"; and "Kaga Shinmeigu" shrine.
*Only Zenshoji Temple is open for viewing.
Daishoji Castle Town is about a 10-15 minute drive from various hot spring resorts in the city.
From JR Kaga Onsen Station, it's about 4 minutes (one stop) on the IR Ishikawa Railway Line towards Fukui.
By all means, please visit Daishoji this Golden Week.
