Symphotony Co., Ltd. has been honored with the 18th Laser Society of Japan Industrial Award for Contribution. The reason for selection was its 'contribution to the acceleration of academic research and industry through femtosecond laser source kits.' The company's efforts to broaden the scope of advanced optical science research by providing these kits, while also leveraging its technological base to develop industrial applications, were highly evaluated.
The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at OPIE '26 (OPTICS PHOTONICS International Exhibition 2026) held at PACIFICO Yokohama. Kazuhiko Sumimura, President and CEO of Symphotony, is expected to attend.
【Background】 Since a time when femtosecond (fs) lasers were expensive and had high barriers to entry and operation, Symphotony has been promoting lower costs and easier-to-implement configurations with its research-use light source kits. At the same time, it has worked on the practical application of industrial high-value-added processing systems by developing this technological foundation. Through these initiatives, the company has promoted the proliferation of femtosecond laser technology from both research and development and industrial application perspectives.
【Research Applications】 Starting with the commercialization of a mode-locked Yb fiber laser kit in 2011, Symphotony has expanded its lineup of femtosecond laser sources for research purposes, including Er fiber, Nd fiber, high-power regenerative amplifiers, and broadband optical comb kits. This has broadened the options for introducing femtosecond lasers in universities and research institutions, contributing to the promotion of R&D.
【Industrial Applications】 Based on this light source technology, Symphotony has also been developing industrial femtosecond laser processing systems. By combining technologies such as highly stable high-power sources, Bi-burst mode, beam shaping using spatial light modulators, support for three wavelengths (IR, Green, UV), and a variable pulse width from 350 fs to 10 ps, the company has advanced its microfabrication technology to handle a wide range of materials and applications.
【Application Fields】 This technology is being deployed in areas that are difficult to process with conventional techniques, such as next-generation power semiconductor materials like GaN, SiC, and diamond, as well as perovskite solar cells and micro-drilling applications. Furthermore, practical applications beyond the R&D stage are also progressing through paid testing, contract processing services, and the installation of industrial processing equipment.
【Academic Impact】 On the academic front, at least 21 papers utilizing Symphotony's femtosecond laser kits have been confirmed, including research results published in Nature Photonics.
