[What is the 'Construction Industry Work Style Forum'?]
The Japanese construction industry faces a chronic and worsening labor shortage. While the population of skilled workers on-site is aging, the influx of young workers remains sluggish, making the recruitment and retention of the next generation an urgent priority. Additionally, demand for construction remains high—driven by the maintenance and renewal of aging social infrastructure and urban redevelopment—raising the question of how to meet these needs with a limited workforce.
To address these challenges, in addition to legal reforms such as the 'Work Style Reform-Related Laws' and the 'Construction Industry Bearers Act,' both the public and private sectors are implementing initiatives to improve personnel retention and practical application. Simultaneously, drastic reforms are required that consider new options, such as improving productivity through the adoption of construction DX, and utilizing diverse human resources, including foreign nationals and women.
The 'Construction Industry Work Style Forum' was launched in 2024 as a platform for discussion to ensure the sustainable development of the construction industry. It was created out of the belief that to solve the increasingly complex and diversified labor shortage issues in the industry, it is necessary for the government, industry, academia (including stakeholders from general contractors to local small and medium-sized construction companies, artisans, and construction service providers) to collaborate and bring their knowledge together to find solutions.
