Français began shortly after the war as a Western confectionery shop in Shibuya. Supported by many, Français's signature product, the mille-feuille, has been beloved by children and adults alike for many years.
From the classic mille-feuille to all other sweets, we are particular about ingredients and manufacturing methods, pursuing deliciousness.
We strive daily to make truly delicious sweets, carefully attending to each detail, from the layers of the pie to the texture of the fruit and the aroma of the nuts.
History of Français
Français Western Confectionery was founded in December 1957 in Shibuya as a Western confectionery shop, driven by the passionate desire of Jiro Takai to popularize French confectionery culture in Japan. Its origins lie in the days spent with Seiji Togo, a Western-style painter and fellow alumnus of Aoyama Gakuin who had ties to France.
At that time, the shop created a succession of innovative products, such as 'Brandy Cake' using brandy, then a luxury item, and 'Honey Citron' based on lemon, contributing to the rise of Western confectionery culture in Japan through French pastries.
After moving its base to Yokohama in 1997, the company invited Jean Millet, a MOF (Meilleur Ouvrier de France), and opened a street-level store in Motomachi, Yokohama. It also worked to spread French gastronomy by opening French restaurants in addition to its confectionery business.
