StudyPocket Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representatives: Ryo Yajima / Hiroyuki Tsuruta) has launched a new 'Friendly View' feature on StudyPocket for STUDENT, its education-focused generative AI service. This new mode offers a more intuitive and child-friendly interface designed to be easily navigable even by elementary school students.

Features include larger text, chat bubbles, soft color schemes, selectable characters, and simplified button labels.

Friendly View transforms the chat interface into a more intuitive and accessible layout for young learners. In addition to the standard clean design, it incorporates larger text, chat bubble-style conversations, gentle color palettes, customizable characters, and easy-to-understand button text—aiming to create a comfortable learning experience that encourages even lower-grade elementary students to confidently ask questions using generative AI.

Additionally, users can now enable optional settings for furigana (phonetic ruby characters) and 'wakachigaki' (word segmentation) in AI responses. These features help younger students read and understand AI-generated content at their own pace, especially when answers contain many kanji characters or long sentences.

Development Background

Generative AI is rapidly spreading into society and schools. However, its use in education requires careful design that considers students' developmental stages, information literacy levels, school and board of education policies, and the need for proper teacher guidance and supervision. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) emphasizes that using generative AI should not be an end in itself, but must be evaluated based on whether it effectively supports the development of competencies outlined in the national curriculum guidelines.

Moreover, for students to truly benefit from AI-generated responses, they must learn to critically read, think independently, and verify information—rather than passively accepting outputs. For younger students, standard chat interfaces and complex AI responses with dense kanji or lengthy paragraphs can be difficult to understand. Safe and appropriate use of generative AI requires not only content safety but also a calm, accessible interface that supports reading and reflection.

To address these needs, StudyPocket developed Friendly View—a gentler interface mode that helps students engage more comfortably with AI under teacher supervision. By offering larger text, chat bubbles, intuitive labels, and support features like furigana and word segmentation, Friendly View aims to help students read AI responses more easily and deepen their thinking at their own pace. The feature is also designed with potential use in special education classrooms in mind.

Users can switch anytime between the standard sleek interface and the Friendly View.

Main Features of Friendly View

1. Larger Text and Spacious Line Spacing

Text in chat messages and input fields is enlarged, with increased line spacing and margins, making long responses easier to read. In Friendly View, font size, spacing, and layout are optimized, and headings and lists are also displayed more clearly.

Friendly View chat interface: Larger text, chat bubbles, soft background colors, and starter questions create an inviting environment for students to begin asking questions.

2. Chat Display in Bubble Format

AI and student messages are shown in speech bubbles. AI responses appear in white bubbles, while student inputs are shown in light blue bubbles, making the conversation flow visually clear.

3. Support for Furigana and Word Segmentation

Furigana helps students read responses containing kanji. Word segmentation (wakachigaki) inserts spaces between word units, making long sentences easier to follow. These settings aim to empower younger students and those needing reading support to independently read and understand AI responses.

Furigana is now supported in AI responses.

4. Selectable Friendly Characters

In Friendly View, students can choose a character they like. These characters do not represent the AI's personality but appear as friendly on-screen guides. The standard view continues to display the service logo, while character selection is only available in Friendly View.

Users can switch between 'Standard' and 'Easy' display modes in settings. Selecting 'Easy' display enables character selection.

5. Child-Friendly Interface Labels

Labels around the chat input area have been simplified for better understanding by young students:

- 'Attach image' → 'Add photo' - 'Send' → 'Send' - 'Share' → 'Send to others' - Input placeholder text: 'Feel free to ask anything!'

Support for Teacher Monitoring of Student Screens

The 'Preview Student Chat' feature in StudyPocket for TEACHER now allows teachers to view how the interface appears in both standard and Friendly View modes. This enables educators to understand exactly how students experience the AI interface, supporting clearer classroom introductions and hands-on guidance.

Data Handling Policy

StudyPocket does not use any user input for AI machine learning. To ensure safe use in schools, all data is handled securely, used solely for the intended service purposes, and never shared with third parties.
