Haya (Business name: Studio N / Headquarters: Moriyama-ku, Nagoya) supports 'April Dream,' an initiative that encourages people to share their dreams on April 1st. This press release is Haya's dream.
Our Dream We want to create a scent for each of the 47 prefectures, spreading a daily life that feels like traveling through Japan. We want to reflect the charm and culture of each region in our scents and deliver the richness of having fragrance in one's daily life. To make this dream a reality, we will continue to face each land and plant one by one, continuing our scent-making process and weaving a future that leads to regional revitalization. Background of the Dream The background to our start in scent-making lies in the experience of touching the scents of Japan's four seasons, landscapes, and the plants that grow in those lands, which gave us a sense of mental clarity. Fragrance is something that quietly works on human senses and memories, influencing one's state of mind and daily life. Scents born from plants harbor the air, climate, and culture that breathe within that land. We believe that facing plants from all over Japan and giving shape to the unique scents of those lands is one way to convey the value of those regions.
Efforts to Date At our own lab in Nagoya, Haya consistently handles everything from material selection to distillation and blending, giving shape to the blessings of plants as fragrance. By repeatedly creating scents that utilize regional materials, we have distilled over 60 types of plants from approximately 30 regions to date. Focusing on the three Tokai prefectures, including Kiso Hinoki from Nagano Prefecture, Natsumikan from Aichi Prefecture, and Yuzu from Gifu Prefecture, we have engaged with plants from various locations, from Aomori in the north to Kagoshima in the south. In addition to our own products, we have also worked on many commissioned scent distillations. We are also proceeding with a 'Traveling Japan through Scent' project, where we carefully distill scents from plants nurtured by the changing seasons, craft them into essential oils, and layer the story of that land into every drop. Our efforts to convey regional charm are expanding, such as the scent of Aichi-grown Natsumikan being adopted as guest room amenities for the luxury cruise ship 'Asuka III' and as a return gift for Nagoya City's hometown tax program. We have also been involved in activities to convey the life and value of fragrance through distillation experiences, workshops, and collaborative programs with companies and local governments. We also carefully utilize the plants after distillation, developing a dyeing product line called 'Somenokoe' using the residual liquid. The residue is returned to the soil, and we continue to create scents rooted in the cycle of nature.
Future Initiatives Moving forward, we will continue to carefully distill the scents of plants rooted in each region while facing the land of each of the 47 prefectures. Even with the same plant, the scent differs depending on the production area and the environment in which it grows. We will continue to create scents while facing each of those individual characteristics. Together with companies, local governments, and farmers, we will co-create scents unique to those lands and expand them to various locations. Through experience programs such as distillation and blending, we will further deepen and expand opportunities to encounter the charm of fragrance and the regions. We will proceed with initiatives that express the climate of each of the 47 prefectures as a scent, allowing people to feel as if they are traveling through Japan. The goal of our dream does not stop at creating scents for the 47 prefectures. Through scents born from Japan's regional resources, we will convey the landscapes and charms of those lands and connect them to regional revitalization.
