The experiential spatial audio exhibit "I Listen," which was showcased at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo's Signature Pavilion "Playground of Life Jellyfish Pavilion" (hereinafter "Jellyfish Pavilion"), will once again be presented as a sound installation for two days, May 30th (Saturday) and 31st (Sunday), at RITTOR BASE Ochanomizu (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo). On May 31st (Sunday), a talk session will also be held with the three individuals deeply involved in the production of this work: Sachiko Nakajima (Producer), Eisuke Yanagisawa (Field Recording), and Jiro Kubo (Spatial Audio Direction). Both the exhibition and the talk session require advance reservations, and an online streaming option is also planned.
At the Jellyfish Pavilion, which connected the ground and underground with a single tree, the "Tree of Creation," various experiential exhibits symbolizing life and creativity were presented. Even after the Expo concluded, these exhibits continue to be deployed in various locations, sustaining efforts to connect the spirit of the Jellyfish Pavilion, which advocated for the democratization of creativity, to the future.
The "I Listen" exhibit, being presented this time, is a spatial audio work that was displayed in the Jellyfish Pavilion's underground reservation-only experience area, "Roots of Life," and is one of the projects inheriting the Expo's legacy. "Roots of Life," the dimly lit underground space beneath the Jellyfish Pavilion's Tree of Creation, was an experiential venue focused on discovering and drawing out the creativity hidden within oneself. Participants sharpened their senses and experienced a time of self-reflection by perceiving various sounds through their ears and entire bodies (vibration). This time, it will be exhibited as a sound installation at RITTOR BASE Ochanomizu, a venue known for its excellent acoustic space. We invite you to fully enjoy this meticulously designed work.
About "I Listen"
This spatial audio work (spatial audio direction: Jiro Kubo) spatially disperses sounds recorded by Eisuke Yanagisawa (Sound Culture Researcher/Field Recording Artist), a leading expert in field recording, from various locations both domestically and internationally. These sounds include an Aeolian harp played by the wind, underwater sounds, ultrasonic waves emitted by bats lowered to the audible range, Vietnamese frogs, and gongs played by Vietnamese ethnic minorities. The pavilion was produced in collaboration with Sachiko Nakajima (Musician, Mathematician, STEAM Educator), the KURAGE Team, and DNP (Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd.), the Jellyfish Pavilion's gold partner.
