STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) has announced the L98GD8E, a 75V absolute maximum rating (AMR) automotive 48V pre-driver. The device complies with the ISO 21780 standard for 48V electrical systems and integrates eight high-side and low-side drive channels.

The eight outputs can be individually configured to drive external high-side N-channel/P-channel MOSFETs or low-side N-channel MOSFETs, offering flexibility for various load configurations. As a DC motor driver, a single IC can control up to two H-bridges, manage multiple relays, resistive and capacitive loads, and support peak-and-hold control for small valves. Channel 6 is suitable for driving safety-critical loads requiring a dedicated enable pin.

Typical applications for the L98GD8E include mild-hybrid systems such as powertrains and regenerative energy systems, as well as auxiliary systems like electric compressors and integrated starter-generators. The ability to drive multiple loads enhances the usability of 48V power networks, enabling higher power delivery, improved energy efficiency, and reduced current ratings in wiring and connectors—contributing to vehicle weight reduction.

The L98GD8E supports compliance with automotive EMC regulations by controlling the slew rate of MOSFETs during both turn-on and turn-off. Advanced diagnostic functions protect loads and detect faults such as battery or ground shorts and open loads, both during on and off states, meeting high safety requirements. The device integrates two 10-bit ADCs to monitor battery voltage and device temperature, enabling dynamic and automatic correction of overcurrent thresholds to adapt to all operating conditions.

The L98GD8E supports 3.3V and 5V logic and features a high-speed SPI interface for IC configuration and diagnostic signal transmission. It also includes diagnostic features such as external fault indication, embedded Built-In Self-Test (BIST), Hardware Self-Check (HWSC) for internal overvoltage detection circuits, and a watchdog timer for Communication Check (CC). SPI access allows reading of battery voltage and device temperature measurements. Additionally, two disable pins enable fast shutdown of dual redundant circuits, further enhancing system safety.

The L98GD8E is currently in volume production and available in a TQFP64 package (10 x 10 mm). The price is approximately $3.95 for 1,000 units.
