STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, has announced two 100W VIPerGaN high-voltage converters. These products contribute to power savings through wide-bandgap technology in appliances, building/home automation, smart lighting, and consumer devices such as TVs and chargers.

The newly announced converters are the VIPerGaN100W, with a drain current limit of up to 3.5A, and the VIPerGaN100WB, featuring a current limit of up to 4.2A to handle short-term peak power up to 125W. This high flexibility allows designers to avoid over-specifying power circuits in equipment with inductive loads like solenoid valves and motors, such as coffee makers, small appliances, and air conditioners. Both products support a universal AC input voltage range of 85V to 265V and can deliver 100W from a 185V source.

Both products integrate a 700V Gallium Nitride (GaN) power transistor, ensuring excellent robustness and reliability. Their extremely low on-resistance (RDS(on)) of 0.27mΩ contributes to achieving high thermal performance. Offered in a QFN package (5 x 6mm), they integrate a flyback converter and a GaN gate driver, eliminating the need for fine-tuning gate resistance or inductance to optimize switching performance.

Furthermore, by leveraging the high switching frequency of GaN power transistors, circuit designers can use smaller passive components, achieving excellent energy efficiency and high power density. To demonstrate this, ST has developed the EVLVIPGAN100WP, a reference design for a 100W USB Type-C Power Delivery 3.0 adapter featuring the VIPerGaN100W. This reference design offers five output settings from 5V/3.0A to 20V/5.0A, a secondary-side controlled regulated power supply, and optocoupler feedback, achieving over 92% peak efficiency and a power density of 24W/in³.

The VIPerGaN100W and VIPerGaN100WB incorporate a flyback converter operating in quasi-resonant mode with zero-voltage switching. Flexible power management allows for optimal control of switching frequency, including frequency foldback at light loads and valley skipping at medium loads, to ensure high-efficiency operation across the entire load range. In valley-skipping mode, ST's proprietary valley-locking feature stabilizes the number of skipped valleys, preventing fluctuations at audio frequencies and ensuring quiet operation across the load range. In no-load conditions, they operate in burst mode, keeping power consumption below 30mW.

Additionally, feed-forward control of the line voltage improves the precision of energy control per cycle, stabilizing power even with input voltage fluctuations. Dynamically changing the blanking time limits switching frequency variations and minimizes switching losses. Both products feature input/output overvoltage protection, over-temperature protection, and brown-in/brown-out protection that recovers from under-voltage conditions.

Expanding ST’s family of highly integrated VIPerGaN converters, the VIPerGaN100W and VIPerGaN100WB are now in mass production. They are available from ST’s eStore or distributors, with prices starting at approximately $1.25 for orders of 1000 pieces.
