  • STMicroelectronics has begun shipping its first STM32 microcontroller products manufactured entirely in China for China-based customers.
  • Local integrated production will start with the high-performance STM32H7 series, and will subsequently expand to the STM32H5 series, which optimally combines excellent performance and security, and the entry-level STM32C5 series.

STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM, hereinafter ST), a global semiconductor manufacturer providing semiconductors for a wide variety of electronic devices, announced that it has begun shipping general-purpose microcontrollers (MCUs) 'STM32' manufactured in China. Through a manufacturing consignment with Hua Hong, a company with a 15-year partnership with ST, the first STM32s, produced entirely in China, have already been shipped to major customers in China. This is an innovative initiative in ST's global supply chain strategy. ST plans to add more types of STM32 MCUs to be manufactured in China in the future, and local mass production of MCU series that optimally combine excellent performance and security, as well as entry-level MCU series, is planned to begin in 2026.

Henry Cao, Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing for ST's China region, commented: "The start of mass production of STM32 MCUs in China is a core initiative for ST regarding its customers in China. ST, in cooperation with Hua Hong, will provide products identical to those leading the global market through a local MCU supply chain with excellent security, reliability, and resilience. ST will continue to support the needs of Chinese customers more quickly and accurately in the future."

Through this collaboration, ST is the first in the industry to complete the manufacture of 40nm MCUs using the same design and technology as products produced abroad, entirely within China, establishing two supply chains both within and outside of China as a global semiconductor manufacturer. ST has built an STM32 supply chain where all processes, from wafer manufacturing to packaging and testing, are fully localized.

In the front-end wafer manufacturing process, ST has strengthened its 15-year partnership with Hua Hong, applying the same 40nm embedded non-volatile memory (eNVM) technology and quality control standards as ST's other global sites. This ensures seamless compatibility with ST's global quality standards even for products manufactured in China. Packaging and testing processes are supported by ST's Shenzhen factory and local semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) companies.

This manufacturing model provides Chinese customers with two MCU supply chain options – either China-made or foreign-made products – while maintaining globally consistent quality and compatibility.
