Specialized is releasing the new "S-Works Tarmac SL9" road bike, developed with a focus on "Time To Finish," the ultimate benchmark in road racing.

Simultaneously, they are launching limited edition team replica framesets in 2026 World Tour team designs, the new "S-Works Rapide Post" seatpost, and the "Roval Rapide Cockpit" with new sizes.

A Bike to Conquer All

Specialized has continuously pursued the world's best road bikes. The reason for refining lightness, aerodynamics, and handling is singular: to guide the rider to the finish line before anyone else. The benchmark for this is "Time To Finish."

Fastest is not about being the lightest. Nor is it about having the best aerodynamics. It's not just about superior handling.

Fastest means having the shortest time to finish in real-world riding conditions.

The Tarmac SL9 efficiently converts rider power into speed, achieving shorter real-world times than any road bike Specialized has ever tested. Its performance is proven through measurements and simulations based on actual World Tour race courses, as well as rider validation.

To shorten the time to finish, the Tarmac SL9 is Specialized's fastest road bike ever.

The Speed Equation

The Tarmac SL9 was developed using the "Speed Equation," not just a catchphrase, but an actual formula to determine how quickly a rider can complete a course.

While the Speed Equation itself is based on the laws of physics, its true value lies in its application and the accuracy of the input data. All variables are measured individually and then integrated into a single simulation.

This approach may be new to cycling, but it is already established in other performance sports. In disciplines like F1 and sailing, winning teams do not optimize for a single metric. Instead, they optimize based on an integrated performance model that balances all variables according to the characteristics of the course or track. An F1 car is designed to achieve the fastest lap time on a specific circuit, rather than pursuing a single performance aspect like lightness or power. Similarly, the "Speed Equation" precisely optimizes all variables to reduce the time to finish, not by excelling in one numerical value, but by deriving the shortest "Time To Finish."

While the equation may be the same for road and gravel, the influencing factors differ. For example, on the road, where speeds are higher and rolling resistance is lower, reducing aerodynamic drag for the rider-bike system is more critical than on gravel. This deep understanding of the forces affecting "Time To Finish" has guided the development of the Tarmac SL9.

This equation yields the time to finish on real-world courses.

"We are pursuing the world's fastest bike by focusing on and designing around the 'decisive moments' that truly separate winners from losers in races. From Tour de France stages to the Spring Classics, real-world course analysis and rider data are reflected in every detail of the Tarmac. All of this is to deliver peak performance at the moments when the demands of racing are highest."

- Alex Jerome, Tarmac SL9 Product Manager

Aerodynamic Data Without the Rider is Meaningless

In our Win Tunnel testing, we employ the 6th generation moving-leg mannequin. Unlike tests with static mannequins, partial leg models, or bikes alone, this system captures how the airflow around the bike changes when a rider is actually pedaling.

A rider is more than just their legs. The rider's presence itself significantly alters airflow. Aero numbers without the rider are incomplete.

"Our 6th generation mannequin system, built on over 10 years of development experience in the Win Tunnel, is specifically designed to provide the most accurate, repeatable, and realistic evaluation in bike testing. It's not just about using a realistic mannequin. The crucial aspect is that we've built the entire system from the ground up to ensure precise and repeatable positioning every time the mannequin is placed on the bike. A shift of just 5 millimeters in position can create a larger difference in aerodynamic drag than changing the bike itself."

- Lionello Baldini, R&D Aerodynamics Engineer

Specialized's Best Aerodynamics Ever

Building on the knowledge gained from the Tarmac SL8 and years of aerodynamic research, all tube shapes on the Tarmac SL9 have been redesigned and refined for speed in World Tour races.

Speed Sniffer

We challenged ourselves to further enhance the aerodynamic performance of the already acclaimed Speed Sniffer (the front nose that sniffs out speed) head tube design. The new Speed Sniffer is 4mm thinner, reducing the frontal projected area by 10%.

Dropped Down Tube

By minimizing the gap between the fork, head tube, front tire, and the leading edge of the down tube, the airflow in this high-pressure area is smoothed. Filling this gap prevents turbulent air from entering the frame, reducing drag and increasing the efficiency of the entire front end.

Flow Fork

A groundbreaking method was developed by twisting the blades inward to more efficiently guide airflow along the frame. The Flow Fork design, with the fork crown cleanly integrated into the junction of the head tube and down tube, maintains airflow attachment for longer, contributing to reduced drag on the entire front section of the bike.

Win Fin

Based on real race data, we observed that many riders only use one bottle during breakaways, as they can be resupplied from the team car. This means the airflow behind the bike differs significantly from previous assumptions. Based on these real-world conditions, the rear of the bike was redesigned, leading to the development of the Win Fin. Optimized for aerodynamic performance in critical race moments, it achieves a 0.5W reduction.

S-Works Rapide Post

Using our proprietary moving-leg mannequin, we discovered that the legs accelerate airflow during pedaling, and the seatpost area is more aerodynamically affected than previously thought. Consequently, the seatpost has been redesigned with a thinner, deeper profile for cleaner airflow, enhancing aerodynamic performance while maintaining compliance. The seatpost will also be sold separately.

Achievable Lightness

The frame weight, achieved without compromise, is 687g. The complete bike starts at 6.5kg*. This was made possible by the Flow State Design established with the Aethos. By relying on shape to support loads rather than material quantity, unnecessary carbon layers are eliminated, achieving a high level of lightness, strength, and ride quality.

*Combination of the lightest frameset, RTP Raw Carbon, and Roval Rapide CLX III.

An Integrated Bike That Responds to Your Will

Speed is not just about peak numbers. It's about maintaining speed and power across all terrains and in critical race moments. The moment you pedal, corner, your senses sharpen, your body reacts, and you enter a state of flow. That is true speed.

Specialized has obsessively focused on ride quality. Despite the new aerodynamic profiles and aggressive tube shapes for improved "Time To Finish," the Tarmac SL9 achieves the same compliance and stiffness targets as the Tarmac SL8, which has been supported by many riders.
