Soracom, Inc. (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director & CEO: Ken Tamagawa) is pleased to announce that its AI/IoT platform "SORACOM" has been adopted by Kyushu Railway Company (Head Office: Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City; Representative Director & President: Yoji Komiya, hereinafter "JR Kyushu") for its railway vehicle data analysis platform.

For railway operators, vehicle maintenance and inspection operations are crucial tasks that underpin the foundation of safe operation. JR Kyushu is promoting the advancement of its maintenance system through the use of digital technology to achieve higher quality with limited personnel. They are starting with vehicle-related operations, which account for the largest portion of overall railway operations, and are working on efficiency improvements through data utilization.

Although sensors were already installed in the vehicles, data acquisition was limited to times when personnel checked on-site, making it difficult to accumulate and analyze data. To continuously utilize such data as big data and transition from time-based maintenance to Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM), which identifies pre-failure signs to perform maintenance at optimal timings, JR Kyushu has been seriously working on this for about two years.

JR Kyushu is developing this vehicle data analysis platform in-house within its group, including connecting it to the cloud, rather than entrusting it to a vendor. They have retrofitted existing vehicles with SORACOM IoT SIMs and IoT gateways, building a system to continuously stream data from vehicle-related equipment such as air conditioning, doors, and power devices to the cloud via cellular communication. The data accumulated in AWS data stores is processed by an analysis platform and utilized for continuous monitoring of equipment and detection of pre-failure signs, thereby establishing a foundation for realizing CBM.

Going forward, JR Kyushu aims to further advance the analysis of data accumulated in the vehicle data analysis platform and expand data utilization beyond the maintenance domain.

Reasons for SORACOM's adoption

There are three main points why SORACOM is utilized for the communication of the vehicle data analysis platform:

Firstly, SORACOM IoT SIM's cellular communication was optimal for transmitting data from continuously moving railway vehicles. In addition to cellular communication that connects stably regardless of location, the ability to centrally manage line status checks and configuration changes from the user console and API met the requirements of a railway operator managing a large number of SIMs per vehicle.

Secondly, the rich features for integration with cloud-based systems enabled them to build a mechanism for sending data to the cloud in a short period. The function on the SORACOM platform side to manage and assign authentication information necessary for cloud integration simplified data linkage with AWS while minimizing individual device settings. Since construction, daily operation, and configuration changes/expansions are also easy, the scope of target vehicles and data items can be gradually expanded.

Thirdly, security. The SIM itself acts as an authentication mechanism, and data can be securely sent to the cloud via SORACOM. The fact that the cellular communication section from the device to SORACOM is configured in a closed network is also one of the factors that allows for safe cloud utilization.

Comments from each company

"By combining SORACOM and the cloud, we were able to rapidly advance the full-scale utilization of vehicle data with an in-house development system. The ability to build and operate the connection from devices to the cloud ourselves has given us great confidence, and we are accumulating knowledge for future expansion of our initiatives. Going forward, we aim to optimize railway management and maximize customer satisfaction not only in vehicle operations but also by making data-driven policy decisions in areas such as supporting driving operations and analyzing transportation schedules."

Daichi Matsubara, Assistant Manager, Kyushu Railway Company

"We are greatly honored that JR Kyushu has adopted SORACOM in an area critical to its business foundation, such as the vehicle data analysis platform. The power of digital is not limited to offices or software worlds. On-site operations that involve daily inspection of vehicles and supporting safe operation are also areas that can be greatly evolved through IoT and data utilization. Soracom will support efforts to evolve the work of those on the ground using technology, from the perspective of IoT and technology utilization."
