This event will focus on the "Sanjo Kite Battle" from Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture, to explore the secrets behind regional enthusiasm and the future of traditional culture.
"Kite" Battles Rooted in the Region
The "Sanjo Kite Battle" is held annually over two days, Saturday and Sunday, around the Lunar Calendar's Dragon Boat Festival (late May to early June). Its origins trace back to the Edo period, and it is designated as a Prefectural Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Twenty teams, including town associations, groups, and club teams, gather. Kite masters operate traditional hexagonal kites, engaging in a powerful battle as the kites intertwine in the sky.
