MET Live in HD brings the world's premier Metropolitan Opera (MET) performances from New York directly to movie screens across Japan.
As part of the ongoing 'MET Live in HD 2025–26 Season,' the new opera 'Frida y Diego: The Last Dream' by Gabriela Lena Frank (libretto: Nilo Cruz), inspired by the Mexican artist couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, will be screened nationwide from Friday, July 10 to Thursday, July 16! (Note: Toho Cinemas will extend screenings until Thursday, July 23 with a two-week run.)
What would you feel if a lost loved one suddenly reappeared before your eyes? Set on the 1957 Day of the Dead in Mexico, the story follows Diego Rivera, grieving the loss of his beloved wife Frida Kahlo, as she miraculously returns to him for just 24 hours. But she is bound by a strict rule…
The story, which inverts the narrative of the classic opera 'Orfeo ed Euridice,' is crafted by the acclaimed composer Gabriela Lena Frank—Grammy-nominated and 2026 Pulitzer Prize (Music) winner—and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz, forming a powerful creative duo.
Direction and choreography are by Deborah Colker, renowned for her work with Cirque du Soleil and the Rio Olympics opening ceremony. A world-class creative team has come together for this production.
Now, full singing clips from the performance and rare behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage are being unveiled!
Four singing clips have been released, including a grand scene featuring Gabriela Reyes as La Catrina, the guardian of the dead, whose voice blends with the choral ensemble of souls in the underworld, as well as a moving aria performed by Isabel Leonard in the role of Frida Kahlo.
Additionally, three vibrant rehearsal videos are now available: orchestra read-throughs, vocal rehearsals with the two lead performers, and dance practice sessions.
Don't miss this season's emotional finale—a must-see opera about love and the soul!
