The special feature of issue 18 is "In Search of Places Where Hope is Born."
What a happy scenery this is.
I don't know how many times I thought that on this journey.
At the first place I visited,
there were people who believed in the potential of that place more than anyone else,
thinking passionately and sometimes calmly about the future of the island.
When I reunited with that person on a cold day,
a warm time was flowing around them just as always.
Delicious food, steam rising from a pot on the stove, conversations among people...
It was a place that made me feel the happiness of sharing time with someone.
The last traditional house I visited was located halfway up some stone steps leading from a slope.
While paying respect to the memories of the village engraved in the house,
they continue to live there carefully. It was filled with such sentiment.
In search of places where hope is born,
I traveled to Osakikamijima, Etajima, and Ogijima.
In addition, there is a 40-page photo gallery introducing the scenery of Setouchi taken by five photographers with ties to the region. We traveled to Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, to explore the memories of the author Chiyo Uno, interviewing people associated with her. The "SETOUCHI ISLAND MAP," based on the concept of everyone going to the island together, features Shodoshima. There are also serialized essays such as "Setouchi Tumulus Voyage Record" in which an archaeologist and a photographer visit ancient tombs in Setouchi, and "Mononoke Island Walking Pilgrimage" written and illustrated by yokai painter Chuhei Yagyu. This is a book full of the charm of Setouchi.

1. "Matsumoto-tei" - A whole-house rental inn restoring a Taisho-era ryokan (Osakikamijima, Hiroshima Prefecture)
In a place called Kigae on Osakikamijima, Hiroshi Kawamoto and Kodai Niwa started a whole-house rental inn by renovating a Taisho-era ryokan that was scheduled for demolition. What they cherished was "leaving it as unchanged as possible." Hiroshi and Kodai polish the area while respecting the local history and culture. We introduce the inn that inherits the memories of Kigae's town and lifestyle, along with Hiroshi and Kodai's thoughts for Osakikamijima.
2. "Bricolage 17" - Transmitting the charm of Etajima through "food" (Etajima, Hiroshima Prefecture)
There are people who connect the island and travelers by transforming the island's bounty and scenery into culinary dishes. "Bricolage 17" is a restaurant where you can relive the nature and island life of Etajima through the catalyst of "food." A potager garden, a sunset deck overlooking the Seto Inland Sea... We introduce the thoughts owner-chef Kenichi Soramoto has put into the next 100 years.
3. Carefully inhabiting every thought. "Ogi no Shiori," a traditional house inn harboring the memories of the island village
"Ogi no Shiori," a traditional house located halfway up the stone steps from a slope, opened last autumn. It was named based on owner Yuji Kudai's wish: "Like a bookmark placed in a book, I want it to be a place where you casually stop by during your journey, something that remains in your heart, or becomes a guidepost." We introduce Kudai's desire to carefully continue living there, preserving the memories of the island and its lifestyle, until passing the baton to the next generation.
