Is reading really that great?

Yuuki Namba, a rising young philosopher and art critic who made a striking solo debut with 'The Philosophy of Narrativization' (Kodansha Bunko) and has since published numerous popular works such as 'Why Can't People Keep Deadlines?' (Horiuchi Shuppan) and 'On Critical Everyday Aesthetics' (Shobunsha), now turns his attention to the philosophy of reading.

'Is reading really such a great thing?'—This question, posed by several booksellers, sparked Namba's contemplation.

While many people talk about the benefits of reading, no one really addresses the fundamental question of 'What does it mean to read a book?' We often overlook the basic question of what reading actually entails and what we are doing when we read.

Moreover, without understanding what reading a book means, it's impossible to say whether reading is good or bad. Therefore, when we want to say that reading is good (or bad), we must first return to the basics and ask, 'But what does reading a book really mean?'

In this book, we will explore the question of what it means to read a book. (From the preface)

Using Namba's proposed concept that 'reading is a performance,' we will consider all kinds of books in this world, from novels and humanities books to manga, how-to books, sheet music, and recipes, traversing various academic fields.

An unprecedented attempt to re-examine the meaning of reading in an era where reading is unconditionally considered a good thing.

Once you read this book, your perception of 'reading' will undoubtedly change completely.

■ Recommendation comments received from Aisa Ito, a philosopher, and Mao Fujita, a pianist!

The following two individuals have provided recommendation comments for this work: Aisa Ito, a philosopher and professor at Tokyo University of Science, and Mao Fujita, an internationally active pianist.

I want to follow the radical and innocent thoughts of the author to the end.

Straight to the point, capturing the essence, and subtly surprising with a slanted philosophy of reading.

—Aisa Ito (Philosopher)

While interpreting sheet music, just as the sound produced by each pianist is different, I realized that when we read books, we are each performing our own 'reading as a performance.'

This work, which provides a new perspective on the act of reading that everyone has experienced, brings new joy to reading. I feel an artistic spark in it.

—Mao Fujita (Pianist)

■ Author's Comment

After the release of my debut work, I visited several bookstores and was asked, 'What kind of book would you like to read next? I'll write anything!' Several booksellers told me, 'It's a book that makes you think about whether reading is really such a great thing!' At that moment, I thought I would write it someday.

I love books. However, I don't think 'love' means 'complete affirmation.' Because I love books, I wanted to create words that consider 'What is a book?' with a good sense of distance, not too attached or too detached. I imagine a future where the discourse about books becomes even more diverse, using this book as one trigger.

The birthplace of this book is a bookstore. I'm excited to see how this book will return to its hometown and be read by readers.
