The cover design for Takashi Atoda's 'Tenohira yori Ai wo Komete: Takashi Atoda Saigo no Shosetsushu' has now been unveiled.
Since his debut, Mr. Atoda has consistently maintained his writing style of crafting stories with manuscript paper and a pencil. Regarding the publication of this book, he comments:
"I've always felt as if 'my own hands' hold the ideas for novels. However, as I've aged, good ideas don't come to me as easily. Nevertheless, my desire to 'deliver novels that have reached a good standard within myself to my readers' remains unchanged. So, I decided to put forth my last effort and bring things to a close."
While he speaks with a gentle smile, it is also true that as readers, we feel a touch of sadness at the news of the 'end' from Mr. Atoda, who has been active on the front lines for many years. As if to empathize with these feelings, Mr. Atoda continues:
"I like 'endings,' so I have no negative feelings about this being the 'last.' I don't think I'll write novels anymore, but I intend to continue working hard on essays and other writings. This will likely be my final short story collection, delivered with gratitude to my readers at the milestone of my 91st year of creative life. I would be delighted if you could pick it up with a bright heart."
'Tenohira yori Ai wo Komete: Takashi Atoda Saigo no Shosetsushu' includes all 36 stories written from 1993, when they were published in magazines, until last year, when he turned 90. Vivid stories and unexpected endings emerge from just a few pages of manuscript. Please look forward to this collection of short pieces, condensed with the skill and playfulness unique to a master.

Last September, we published '90-year-old Man Living Alone,' a collection of essays written in a lighthearted style, offering wisdom for elderly men living alone and tips for spending each day cheerfully. Since its publication, it has been featured on NHK's 'Ohayo Nippon' and 'Gogo LIVE Newsーン,' national newspapers, and even two Korean media outlets, and has now surpassed 37,000 copies with its 8th printing.
Since his wife moved into a nursing home a few years ago, he has been living alone at home. In this book, Mr. Atoda describes his daily life in old age, accepting aging and living positively with the motto, "If things are 'just okay,' that's fine," and "Humor is for the elderly." He writes with his characteristic light touch.
Checking his face in the mirror every morning, ensuring nutrition with simple cooking, experiencing failed shopping through mail order, enjoying rakugo by 'reading' it, counting tales from The Tale of Genji or Hyakunin Isshu on sleepless nights, and sometimes thinking of his wife and those who have passed away—this rich collection of essays offers hints for lightly enjoying everything from food, clothing, and shelter to hobbies and education, and conveys the richness of life through 90 years of accumulated wisdom and experience.
