In addition to 'Diary of an Old, Senile Gourmand,' which became a massive topic of discussion due to its overly provocative and raw descriptions during its magazine serialization, this book also includes essays from the same period, such as his commentary on 'One Hundred Years of Solitude,' his reminiscences of Kenzaburo Oe, and confessions of his state of mind in old age. This compilation represents the fulfilling literary achievements of a literary giant who has reached the age of ninety. It is a rare book in which the writer's spirit explodes with the desire to entertain readers, even after passing the age of ninety and suffering severe injuries and illnesses!
"Misfortune began the next day. Trying to get rid of the pain in my shoulder, I took four tablets of Sedes. I immediately felt sick, but somehow managed to go to the Korean restaurant 'Mokucha' that day. Mitsuko had makgeolli, and I had pear juice. I filled my stomach with buchimgae (pancakes), bulgogi, samgyetang, and sundae. Despite saying I couldn't eat anymore, when the cold noodles arrived, Mitsuko ate them frantically. I felt fine until I went home and went to bed. On the morning of Saturday the 23rd, I woke up as usual and tried to walk down the hallway. My body completely refused to move. I collapsed on top of a small chest of drawers, sustained severe injuries to my face, lay bedridden in the hallway, and was taken to Kobe Medical Center by ambulance.
It was a day off, but the doctor on duty took care of me. I received an IV drip and various tests. The cause was my kidneys. My condition had worsened due to taking too much medication, and the massive dose of Sedes resulted in the loss of mobility in my entire body. They recommended hospitalization, but I refused. It was because I was worried about Mitsuko. (omitted)
From the next day, I began a bedridden life. When it comes to this, it is no time for gourmet food."
