All are growing well through artificial incubation and are currently in the backyard. They are scheduled to gradually join their fellow emus in the "Savanna Area" as they grow.
【Recent status of the emu chicks】
Length: approximately 60cm, Weight: 3kg.
They are growing steadily in the backyard and are scheduled to join the "Savanna Area" in due course. With the addition of these three chicks, the total number of emus living here will be five. Additionally, emus also live in the "Kangaroo Hill" area of our park.
【English Name】Emu 【Scientific Name】Dromaius novaehollandiae
【Classification】Casuariiformes, Dromaiidae 【Distribution】Grasslands and sandy areas throughout the Australian continent
【Morphology】Body length: 1.4-2.0m, Height: 1.6-2.0m, Weight: 40kg-60kg
Among extant birds, it is the second largest after the ostrich. Its body length is about 1.6m to 1.9m, but its wings are atrophied and small, allowing it to jump only about 20cm. Instead, it can run at a speed of 50km/h. It enjoys bathing and can swim. Its diet is omnivorous, mainly eating insects, fruits, seeds, and undergrowth. The male takes on all responsibilities from nest building to raising the young. Males and females have different calls; males make a low "guo-guo" sound, while females make a drum-like "bon-bon..." sound.
