The Future of Regenerative Medicine and the Path to Societal Implementation Driven by Industry, Government, Academia, and Public Collaboration
Cutting-edge medical fields, including regenerative medicine, are expected to significantly contribute to strengthening Japan's international competitiveness and extending the healthy lifespan of its citizens. However, as a new medical field, it requires long periods and substantial costs for verification of safety and efficacy, and various challenges have been pointed out in terms of its regulatory framework.
Under these circumstances, what kind of initiatives are needed to implement regenerative medicine in society and develop it as one of Japan's major industries? The "Future of Japan in Regenerative Medicine Study Group," launched in 2023 as a forum to deepen discussions on the ideal state of regenerative medicine, brings together experts from industry, government, academia, and the public involved in regenerative medicine to continuously discuss the challenges and ideal vision for its sound development.
In formulating a roadmap for the future, the goal is to achieve "societal implementation of regenerative medicine," "industrialization," "system development," and "increased understanding" by 2030. By 2040, regenerative medicine is envisioned to become a common treatment, positioning Japan as a global leader driving the regenerative medicine field in both economic and industrial aspects.

The "Future of Japan in Regenerative Medicine Study Group" has set "The Next Decade of Regenerative Medicine" as its theme for fiscal year 2025 and has deepened discussions from three perspectives: "Accelerating Innovation," "Clinical Evaluation of Regenerative Medicine Products," and "Healthcare Finance and Public Understanding." In the co-hosted symposium, a panel discussion was held based on these points, sharing important perspectives and directions for the further development of regenerative medicine.
