What is ME/CFS International Awareness Day?
May 12th was established as "ME/CFS International Awareness Day" in honor of Florence Nightingale's birthday, who is believed to have suffered from ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). On this day, landmarks around the world are lit up in blue, the awareness color, and awareness events and symposiums are held.
In Japan, it is estimated that there are 100,000 to 300,000 patients, and despite approximately 30% suffering from severe symptoms that leave them bedridden or unable to go out, awareness is extremely low, and no effective treatment has been established.
