World's Attention! "Kateigaho x S.T. Dupont x Kagawa Lacquerware" - The Art of Four Seasons Residing in Your Palm is Born

Sekai Bunka Publishing Inc., publisher of the lifestyle magazine 'Kateigaho,' has planned a special collaboration between the prestigious French brand "S.T. Dupont" and traditional Japanese craft "Kagawa Lacquerware" for luxury lighters. Four works themed after the four seasons, adorned with "Kagawa Lacquerware" decorations, have been created. Supervised by a Living National Treasure, these one-of-a-kind lighters, finished with exquisite techniques, elevate the fleeting beauty of flame into eternal art.

Kagawa Lacquerware, established by Tamakaji Zokoku in the late Edo period, is a traditional craft characterized by its representative techniques of "Kinma," "Zonsei," and "Choshitsu," and rich colors. For this project, contemporary artists have inherited these techniques and applied them to the "Le Grand Dupont" gold lighters from the prestigious French brand "S.T. Dupont," specifically the exquisite "Diamond Head" guilloche decorated pieces. The supervision was provided by Yoshito Yamashita, a Living National Treasure and holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property "Kinma." After approximately four months of production, four works expressing the scenes of spring, summer, autumn, and winter were completed.

Four masterpieces representing the four seasons are born

Spring: "Haruhikage" by Yutaka Ota

A work that evokes the warmth of spring and the breath of life. The main technique used is "Kinma," where lacquer is applied in more than ten layers, patterns are carved with a Kinma sword, colored lacquer is filled into the grooves, and then polished flat. This piece utilizes "Nunomebori," an exquisite technique within Kinma that involves carving 2-3 lines per millimeter. For the floral expressions, "Zonsei" technique is used, which involves drawing patterns with colored lacquer and adding line carvings for outlines and details.
