Seiko Watch Corporation (President, CEO, and CCO: Shinji Hattori; Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo) has developed a mechanical watch capable of accumulating and displaying up to 1 million hours, which has been presented to Major League Baseball player Shohei Ohtani.
Since 2016, the company has continuously appointed Ohtani as a brand ambassador for Seiko in Japan, marking his 10th anniversary in 2026. This unique, one-of-a-kind model, completed for this milestone, was developed in response to Ohtani’s personal reflection: 'As a baseball player, how much more time can I accumulate?' Development began approximately three years ago. Since launching Japan’s first domestic wristwatch in 1913, the company has been crafting timepieces for over 110 years. Deeply resonating with the value of accumulated time, Seiko embarked on the unprecedented project of creating a mechanical watch capable of tracking 1 million hours (approximately 114 years).
This timepiece features a groundbreaking design with five layered disk hands, each accumulating time. The rotating motion of the disks resembles the celestial trails of stars across the night sky. While the movement of stars is imperceptibly slow to the naked eye, it steadily progresses—just like the effort Ohtani has accumulated over time. Inspired by this imagery, the special model was named Seiko Star Time.
≪Presentation to Shohei Ohtani≫
Completed after approximately three years of development, the timepiece was presented to Ohtani by Shinji Hattori, President, CEO, and CCO of Seiko Watch Corporation.
≪Comment from Shohei Ohtani≫
'I’ve always wanted to materialize something tangible that reflects how much time I’ve accumulated so far, and how much more I can give. Seeing the actual watch now, it’s exactly as I imagined—quite surprising. The design is truly magnificent. Thank you very much.'
≪Comment from Shinji Hattori, President, CEO, and CCO≫
'We are delighted that he is pleased. Our development team, who poured their hearts into this project inspired by Ohtani’s passion, feels deeply rewarded. The birth of a timepiece with globally exceptional cumulative performance marks a significant step for us and is a source of pride, contributing to the further evolution of watch culture. We hope this watch allows Shohei Ohtani to reflect on his journey so far while dreaming of the future ahead.'
≪Model Features≫
Seiko Star Time is a one-of-a-kind mechanical watch capable of accumulating and displaying up to 1 million hours, featuring five disk hands. (*).
The five rotating disk hands accumulate time, with the innermost disks indicating accumulated periods of 24 hours, 1,000 hours, 10,000 hours, 100,000 hours, and 1 million hours, respectively, displayed beneath red markers. The central disk hand also shows the current time. To minimize the perceived thickness of the five-layered disk hands, a newly designed case structure was developed. This innovation required changes to the movement shape and the establishment of new assembly methods, achieved through cross-departmental collaboration between design and manufacturing teams.
* As of July 2026. Based on company research.
Throughout the project, multiple consultations were held with Ohtani, leading to the innovative idea of embedding diamonds into each disk hand, achieving unprecedented exclusivity and uniqueness.
Additionally, the silicone strap was custom-designed for optimal fit, tailored to Ohtani’s wrist size, ensuring both comfort and aesthetic elegance during wear.
