Seikatsu Club Consumers' Co-operative Union (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; Chairman: Shoichi Murakami; hereinafter Seikatsu Club) is promoting the switch to plant-derived biomass film packaging using 40% sugarcane to promote de-plasticization. As the first step, the packaging for the highly popular 'Pork Wiener' and 'Pork Wiener Volume Pack' was changed in January 2026.

To reduce CO2 emissions, Seikatsu Club is promoting de-plasticization and reducing the use of petroleum-derived plastics. As part of this initiative, the company will sequentially switch from its conventional additive-free pursuit film to the newly adopted biomass film packaging.

General food packaging films use various additives such as antioxidants, lubricants, colorants, and anti-fogging agents. Seikatsu Club has established its own safety standards for packaging materials and has been using an additive-free pursuit film that eliminates additives as much as possible. However, because it was a petroleum-derived plastic film, there was a challenge of emitting CO2 during manufacturing. Therefore, to promote de-plasticization, the decision was made to adopt a biomass film that does not contain petroleum-derived ingredients.

The raw material for the biomass film is made from the bagasse leftover from refining sugar from sugarcane, making it a plastic product that contains no petroleum-derived ingredients. The new film has a characteristic of not affecting global heating based on the concept of carbon neutrality, which effectively reduces manufacturing CO2 emissions to zero by offsetting them with the CO2 absorbed by the plants during their growth process. Seikatsu Club aims to realize a sustainable society by adopting sustainable materials not only for the contents of the products (ingredients and manufacturing methods) but also for the external packaging.
