SBI Insurance Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President and Representative Director: Takashi Ono, hereinafter 'SBI Insurance') has independently developed a hail disaster prediction model (hereinafter 'this model'), the first for a direct non-life insurance company*1, and will begin sending hail alert emails to auto insurance policyholders on March 30*2.
Recognizing that a non-life insurance company's important mission is not only to enhance compensation in emergencies but also to curb losses by preventing damage in advance, SBI Insurance has conducted two Proof of Concepts (PoC) since March 2025. Now that a certain level of hail prediction accuracy has been confirmed, we are releasing this service to support disaster prevention and mitigation against hail.
In recent years, due to the increasing frequency and severity of hail disasters associated with global warming, cases of vehicle damage are also on the rise. While hail damage is considered difficult to predict in advance, taking countermeasures such as moving vehicles to covered parking or using vehicle body covers can help prevent or mitigate damage.
SBI Insurance has been working on building a hail prediction model with the aim of pre-emptively understanding the possibility of hail and alerting customers. Since March 2025, we have been conducting PoCs utilizing auto insurance payout records and weather big data for the development and refinement of the prediction model.
As a result, verification for practical application has been completed, and from March 30 onwards, we will predict the possibility of hail at the municipal level for the following day based on daily weather information, and start sending alerts via email to auto insurance policyholders living in prefectures at risk of hail.
In conjunction with the alert distribution, we have partnered with Relo Club, Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, President: Shigeru Okamoto) to offer custom-made body covers provided by AUTOLAB, Inc. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Shun Chida, hereinafter 'AUTOLAB') at a special price to SBI Insurance auto policyholders. By promoting an environment where initiatives to prevent damage and mitigate loss are easy to implement, we will support customers in enjoying a secure car life.
Going forward, SBI Insurance will continue striving to create value that further satisfies customers through the provision of products and services that appropriately utilize digital technology.
