Shirokiya Co., Ltd. (Osaka Prefecture; President & CEO: Yusuke Saraya) will co-host a pop-up store event themed around the international sustainability certification 'RSPO Certification' for palm oil, in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund Japan (WWF Japan; Tokyo; Chairman: Takejirou Sueyoshi), and Taiyo Yushi Co., Ltd. (Kanagawa Prefecture; President & CEO: Satoru Nakayama). The event is held under the shared vision of 'Minna no Ethical Food Lab' (https://ethicalfoodlab.tsite.jp/), a co-creation platform led by Culture Convenience Club Co., Ltd. (CCC; Kanagawa Prefecture; President & CEO: Takunori Takahashi). The event will take place at Shonan T-SITE (Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture) from Wednesday, June 17, 2026, to Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

'Minna no Ethical Food Lab' is a co-creation platform launched in 2021. It aims to promote 'ethical living through food' by engaging diverse stakeholders—including consumers, manufacturers, retailers, and organizations—across industries to address the social challenge of 'sustainable food'.

Everyday Choices Can Help Protect Forests and Animals

The theme of this initiative is 'palm oil'. Palm oil is a vegetable oil derived from oil palms cultivated primarily in Indonesia and Malaysia. It is widely used not only in food products such as snacks, bread, and instant noodles, but also in detergents, soaps, and cosmetics, making it an essential part of daily life. While highly efficient in production and one of the most widely used vegetable oils globally, its rising demand has led to serious social and environmental issues, including deforestation, loss of wildlife habitats, and labor concerns. In particular, the destruction of tropical rainforests and its impact on wildlife such as orangutans have become global concerns, prompting reflection on how our 'convenient and affluent lifestyles' are deeply connected to the natural environment.

Rather than simply delivering this message as 'awareness-raising', this initiative aims to create a space where visitors can personally discover and empathize with the idea that their everyday choices—such as selecting food, favorite detergents, or soaps—can positively impact future forests, animals, and communities.

Promoting 'RSPO Certification' as a Better Choice

RSPO Certification is an international standard for sustainably produced palm oil, ensuring environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and respect for human rights. Established in 2004 under the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), this certification system is widely recognized. At this event, RSPO-certified products will be showcased alongside informative POP displays and book recommendations that clearly explain environmental issues and biodiversity. Under the theme 'Every wash helps protect forests and animals', the space is designed to spark visitors' interest in nature and deepen their understanding through hands-on engagement with products.

Shirokiya's Initiatives

Shirokiya has long positioned 'hygiene', 'environment', and 'health' as core pillars of its business, striving to solve social issues through commercial activities. Regarding palm oil—a key raw material in its products—the company began environmental conservation activities in 2004 in Malaysia's Borneo, a major production region. In 2005, Shirokiya became the first Japanese-based company to join the RSPO. In 2010, it launched Japan's first consumer product made with RSPO-certified palm oil. Today, all of its consumer products carry the RSPO certification mark.

For this event, Shirokiya will display and sell products from its 'Yashinomi Series', known for being fragrance-free and colorant-free, including 'Yashinomi Detergent', 'Yashinomi Detergent Premium Power', 'Yashinomi Laundry Detergent', and 'Yashinomi Fabric Softener'.

Comments from Representatives

Mr. Nozomu Takita, Leader of 'Minna no Ethical Food Lab', CCC

CCC's mission is 'to build cultural infrastructure'. We have long aimed to enrich lifestyles by connecting people and society. Through 'Minna no Ethical Food Lab', we aim to go beyond simply informing people about social issues—we want to create enjoyable experiences that empower individuals to make ethical choices in their own way.

Ms. Akiko Minami, Palm Oil Project Leader, Forest Group, WWF Japan

While more Japanese companies are offering sustainable products, consumers rarely learn about the efforts and significance behind them. Since 'every purchase is a vote', we want to share this information with as many people as possible. We are delighted that this event can play a part in that mission.

Mr. Toshiaki Higashiyama, Sustainability Promotion Team, Taiyo Yushi Co., Ltd.

Palm oil is an 'invisible' ingredient, yet it brings many benefits. We hope this event helps people understand the challenges associated with it and the efforts companies are making—serving as a catalyst for a better future.

Ms. Yuseyo Aoshima, Communication Division, Shirokiya Co., Ltd.

In 2010, Shirokiya became the first Japanese company to undergo RSPO certification audit and obtained Segregation (Identity Preserved) certification. Today, our consumer products are 100% certified under a combination of Credit (Book-and-Claim) and Segregation systems, with certification marks displayed on all products as standard. We hope this event further raises awareness of RSPO and contributes to the preservation of tropical rainforest biodiversity.
