SAKE COMPETITION 2026 Special Program to Air on BS-TBS This Fall

The SAKE COMPETITION executive committee has announced that a special program for the "SAKE COMPETITION," a competition to determine the world's most delicious commercially available sake, will be broadcast on BS-TBS this fall. The special program is scheduled to feature footage from the awards ceremony and party to be held on June 10, as well as the unveiling event for winning sakes to be held in Los Angeles, USA in early August. The SAKE COMPETITION began in 2012 with the philosophy of "showing a new standard so that consumers can encounter truly delicious sake regardless of brand." Therefore, only commercially available sake is eligible, and the judging method is thorough: the brand is completely hidden, and the competition is based solely on the sake itself. This ensures that any brand has a chance to take first place. Additionally, Japan's "traditional sake brewing," which includes sake, was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in December 2024, drawing global attention to sake. In its 12th edition this year, in addition to the five categories of "Junmai-shu," "Junmai Ginjo-shu," "Junmai Daiginjo," "SUPER PREMIUM," and "MODERN NATURAL," a special judging for the "Awamori category" was held to commemorate the reconstruction of the main hall of Shuri Castle, scheduled for fall 2026. These six categories, along with four special awards, saw entries of over 1,000 sakes from 367 breweries worldwide.
