"I was able to experience things in the forest that I could never learn inside a classroom."
"I want to learn more about nature and get closer to it."
"Working on surveys with students from other schools broadened my own interests."
These heartfelt reflections came from students at the 'Takao 100-Year Forest' in Hachioji City, Tokyo.
At this forest, owned by Sagawa Express, an environmental education program called 'Takao Green High School' is being conducted for local middle and high school students.
Since its launch in the 2025 academic year, students from six schools in Hachioji have conducted surveys and research in areas of personal interest—such as aquatic organisms, insects, birds, and plants. With expert support, they have entered the forest throughout the year to observe nature firsthand.
─ Searching for living creatures while wading in water up to their knees.
─ Investigating vegetation in areas untouched by human hands.
─ Setting up sensor cameras to record animals living in the forest.
Through these unique experiences beyond the classroom, students have come to appreciate not only the richness of nature but also its complexity and the importance of conservation. Approximately ten field surveys were conducted annually, and in March this year, a成果 presentation event was held at Sagawa Express's Tokyo headquarters. During the event, students presented their year-long findings using self-created slides, sharing observations, analysis, and insights into the current state and challenges of the local natural environment.
The 'Takao 100-Year Forest' is more than just a corporate-owned woodland—it has become a place where the next generation can engage with nature, reflect, and deepen their learning. This program is scheduled to continue into the 2026 academic year. Sagawa Express will continue supporting opportunities for participants to actively learn about the environment in collaboration with the local community.
