MUJI Launches New "T-Shirts Knitted Using Traditional Methods" Series

Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd. (Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo / President and Representative Director: Satoshi Shimizu), which develops MUJI products, will sequentially launch the "Men's T-Shirt Knitted Using Traditional Methods, Crew Neck Short Sleeve" featuring a moderate thickness, texture, and softness on July 6 (Mon), and the "Men's T-Shirt Knitted Using Traditional Methods, Crew Neck Long Sleeve" on August 24 (Mon). These will be available at MUJI stores, primarily large stores, and online.

This product is based on the "Tenjiku T-shirt Knitted Using Traditional Methods" that has been popular in MUJI Labo, and will be launched as part of the regular line. We have reviewed the fit and updated it to a T-shirt that is easy to use every day. In an era of mass production and mass consumption that pursues efficiency, knitting machines that take time to knit like this are becoming increasingly rare each year, but they have the characteristic of producing a soft texture by knitting carefully. This product utilizes a loopwheel knitting machine, which is an old type of knitting machine. By knitting slowly without putting extra stress on the yarn, a soft texture like it contains air is achieved. MUJI will continue to value manufacturing that is close to everyday life, paying attention to methods and backgrounds that are being lost in modernization.

Loopwheel Knitting Machine

The traditional loopwheel knitting machine is a rare machine that is now hardly found in the world or in Japan. It is a mechanism where a disc-shaped device with needles attached to a cylinder rotates, and the fabric is formed. This rotating disc-shaped device is the loopwheel. It is also called a winding knitting machine because it knits while winding upwards from the bottom. Knitting while winding reduces the extra stress on the fabric. Due to the two characteristics of slow fabric knitting and knitting with less stress while winding, fabric knitted with a loopwheel knitting machine has a soft finish that is full of air and fits the body loosely.
