Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd. (Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo / President and Representative Director Satoru Shimizu), which operates MUJI, will hold the exhibition "'Book Activist' Irma Boom: Book Activist" at ATELIER MUJI GINZA Gallery 1 & 2 inside "MUJI Ginza" (Chuo-ku, Tokyo) from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, August 23, 2026.
Since its launch in 2015, MUJI BOOKS has proposed a lifestyle with books under the concept "Always with good words." We believe that a "physical book" is not only for conveying information through text and pictures, but it also exists in space as an object. Unlike fragments of information that disappear in an instant on digital screens, books are three-dimensional, complex, and exist alongside people as time passes.
This time, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of MUJI BOOKS, we have prepared a book titled "Book Activist" together with Dutch graphic designer Irma Boom. "Book Activist" is a term that praises everyone involved with books: readers, sellers, deliverers, binders, printers, writers, and more. This book deciphers the "physical book" from various perspectives through her work of creating over 500 books in about 40 years. It has been finished as a book small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, yet thick like a dictionary.
Irma Boom has created books of different forms each time with various partners around the world. Her style of extracting only what is necessary from a vast amount of information and constructing it in the form of a "physical book" overlaps with MUJI's philosophy of manufacturing, which involves selecting materials, reviewing processes, and shaping products that fulfill necessary functions. Through this exhibition, we will once again reexamine the value and possibilities of "physical books" and attempt to make it a place that triggers a lifestyle that continues to be with "good words."
At the venue, we will exhibit for the first time in Asia the unique "physical books" created by Irma Boom, valuable books housed in MoMA and the Centre Pompidou, models of small handmade books that are rarely seen, and "IBO Paper," a paper jointly developed with a paper manufacturing company. We will also introduce a number of "good words" extracted from books.
