Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd. (Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo / President and Representative Director Satoru Shimizu), which operates MUJI, will hold the exhibition 'Book Activist Irma Boom: Book Activist' at ATELIER MUJI GINZA Gallery 1 & 2 within 'MUJI Ginza' (Chuo-ku, Tokyo) from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, August 23, 2026.
Since its launch in 2015, MUJI BOOKS has proposed a lifestyle with books under the concept 'Always with Good Words.' We believe that 'physical books' do not merely convey information through text and images, but exist in space as objects. Unlike fragments of information that quickly disappear on a digital screen, books are multidimensional, complex entities that accumulate time alongside people.
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of MUJI BOOKS, we have prepared a book titled 'Book Activist' with the Dutch graphic designer Irma Boom. 'Book Activist' is a term that praises everyone involved with books: readers, sellers, deliverers, binders, printers, and writers. This book interprets 'physical books' from various perspectives through her work of designing over 500 books in about 40 years. It has been finished as a volume that is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, yet thick as a dictionary.
Irma Boom has created differently shaped books with various partners around the world. Her style of extracting only what is necessary from a vast amount of information and constructing it in the form of a 'physical book' resonates with MUJI's manufacturing philosophy, which selects materials, reviews processes, and creates products that fulfill necessary functions. Through this exhibition, we aim to re-examine the value and potential of 'physical books' and provide an opportunity to continue living with 'always good words.'
At the venue, we will exhibit for the first time in Asia unparalleled 'physical books' created by Irma Boom, precious books housed in MoMA and the Centre Pompidou, rare handmade miniature book models, and 'IBO Paper' developed jointly with a paper manufacturing company. In addition, we will introduce numerous 'always good words' excerpted from various books.
