What is SSTR (Sunrise Sunset Touring Rally)?
SSTR (Sunrise Sunset Touring Rally, hereafter SSTR) is one of Japan's largest touring rallies, conceived by motorcycle adventurer Fukashi Kazama. Starting with 130 motorcycles in 2013, this event has grown not as a race competing for speed, but as a festival for riders themed around 'adventure' and 'travel'.
Its greatest feature lies in its unique format: starting from the eastern coast of the Japanese archipelago at sunrise, touring 'stopover points' set using an original GPS system to earn points, and aiming for the goal at the Chirihama Nagisa Driveway in Ishikawa Prefecture by sunset of that same day. Riders themselves determine their participation date, starting point, and route to the goal. Rather than competing in technique or ranking, they ride towards the goals they have set for themselves. The system in which local residents, governments, and companies passionately support and cooperate with these individual challenges is also a major attraction of this tournament.
