Nagahama Roman Beer will sequentially ship a limited collaboration brewed beer, 'Sakura Cask Conditioning Mexican Style Vienna Lager,' in partnership with HINO BREWING, another craft beer manufacturer from Shiga Prefecture, starting May 26, 2026 (Tuesday).

Nagahama Roman Beer Nagahama Roman Beer was founded in 1996 in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2026. Nestled in the historically rich streets of Nagahama, where the abundant nature nurtured by the melted snow of Mt. Ibuki thrives, it is a beer factory-attached restaurant. Since its establishment, while preserving the beloved taste of its classic beers, it continuously challenges itself to brew new limited-edition beers.

HINO BREWING HINO BREWING was founded in Hino Town, Shiga Prefecture in 2018. HINO BREWING's theme is "The more you drink, the better the festival gets! Craft beer by festival lovers, for festivals." They have collaborated with Nagahama Roman Beer annually for the "Bonbai Zen" limited-edition beer during the Nagahama Bonbai Exhibition, a representative winter festival of Nagahama City.

What is Vienna Lager? Vienna Lager is a historic lager-style beer born in Vienna, Austria in 1841. It is an amber-colored beer sometimes called Wiener Lager. By using Vienna malt, which is dried at a higher temperature than regular malt, this beer style offers a more pronounced toasted bread-like aroma and malt sweetness.

What is Sakura Cask Conditioning? Typically, this term is mainly used for whisky, referring to the process of aging whisky in barrels made from cherry blossom wood. For this product, we use sakura barrels from the Nagahama Distillery. The finished Mexican Style Vienna Lager was aged in sakura barrels for about one month. This special Mexican Style Vienna Lager has a sakura mochi-like aroma and nuances of cherry blossom due to the cask conditioning.

Comment from Head Brewer Futoshi Okumura This Nagahama x HINO collaboration marks our first challenge with Mexican Style Vienna Lager at the Nagahama brewery. By further conditioning it for about one month in Nagahama Distillery's sakura casks under low-temperature conditions, we infused it with subtle Japanese sakura nuances. Using Amora Preta (PolishHops.com) from Poland, the hometown of HINO's Head Brewer Sean, the citrusy and berry-like fruity aroma from the hops combined with the sakura cask aroma evokes the image of 'sakuramochi'. Despite its amber appearance, the use of corn results in a crisp, easy-drinking beer.
