Nagahama Distillery, Japan's smallest whisky distillery, operated by Nagahama Roman Beer Co., Ltd. (Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture), has decided to welcome Mr. Hajime Sato, former Asahi Breweries and Nikka Whisky ambassador, as its official brand ambassador. By fusing the deep expertise of Mr. Sato, who has spent years building Japanese whisky culture alongside numerous legendary spirits, with the 'Ichijo Itaru' (one brew, one cask) spirit upheld by Nagahama Distillery, the company aims to enhance quality beyond the boundaries of craft whisky and strengthen the dissemination of its culture both in Japan and abroad.
Background of the Appointment
Since beginning operations in 2016, Nagahama Distillery has challenged itself to create whisky without the constraints typical of small-scale distilleries, earning high praise in global awards. Meanwhile, Mr. Hajime Sato is a true evangelist of the Japanese whisky world, having inherited the passion of Masataka Taketsuru during his time at Nikka Whisky and captivated many fans with his profound knowledge.
This partnership was realized because Mr. Sato resonated with the 'potential' and 'challenging spirit' of Nagahama Distillery. By adding the sensibilities of Mr. Sato, who has mastered traditional techniques, to the young and passionate team at Nagahama, the company expects to create new value through a chemical reaction.
Future Outlook
Inheriting Knowledge and Expanding Venues for Exchange Nationwide
Moving forward, the company will actively hold seminars that delve deeply into the journey and vision of Nagahama Distillery, utilizing Mr. Sato's rare experience. Mr. Sato, who is well-versed in the history of Japanese whisky, will serve as the lecturer, providing wide and deep insights into its essence for everyone from professionals to enthusiasts.
Furthermore, there are plans to actively participate in whisky events across the country. As an ambassador, Mr. Sato will travel to various regions, delivering the charm of Nagahama whisky to the entire country through direct interaction with fans.
Hello everyone, my name is Hajime Sato, and I have been appointed as the ambassador for Nagahama Distillery. I have been involved in the alcoholic beverage industry for about 40 years. In my previous position, I spent about nine years until my retirement as a whisky ambassador, interacting with customers at whisky seminars and events across the country with the goals of promoting fan engagement, expanding the whisky-drinking population, and enhancing brand value. In 2019, I obtained the 'Master of Whisky' certification from the Whisky Culture Research Institute (the 10th person in Japan to do so). Under the spirit of 'Ichijo Itaru,' I intend to work with the staff, who create delicious whisky with burning passion, to firmly convey the charm of the Nagahama brand to all of you.
I look forward to working with you.
Operating within the Nagahama Roman Beer facility since 2016, this is the smallest craft distillery in Japan, nurtured by the climate of Lake Biwa, Mount Ibuki, and Nagahama. From its small, alembic-style pot stills and ultra-slim line arms, the distillery produces its signature, rich-tasting new make spirit every day.
