New Age-Based Accounts 'Roblox Kids' & 'Roblox Select' Launch in Japan!

Roblox (NYSE: RBLX), the online platform used by over 150 million people worldwide, today announced the global launch of 'Roblox Kids' and 'Roblox Select' accounts, including in Japan. These new age-based account experiences are designed for users under 16, evolving with children's development and featuring built-in safety protections.

Following a limited rollout last month in Australia, Indonesia, the Netherlands, and New Zealand, the accounts are now available worldwide, including Japan. These accounts are designed to tailor game access, chat functionality, and parental controls to the user’s age, while also providing parents with greater visibility and flexibility over their child’s Roblox experience.

Users are automatically assigned to the appropriate account experience based on Roblox’s advanced age verification system. This implementation integrates age verification, age-based account settings, content ratings, ongoing moderation, and expanded parental controls into a single, comprehensive framework designed to support the healthy development of young users. At launch, verified users under 16 will retain access to most of their favorite games, while verified users aged 16 and older will experience no changes.

Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer (CSO), stated:
"Children’s needs change significantly as they grow, so their online experiences must adapt accordingly. Through Roblox Kids and Roblox Select, we are building age-appropriate safety measures designed to support young users at different stages of development, while providing parents with the best tools to freely customize experiences according to their family’s values."

Specifications for the New Age-Based Accounts: 'Roblox Kids' and 'Roblox Select'

- Roblox Kids Account (for ages 5–8)
This account applies the strongest default safety protections on the platform. Users can access only games (experiences) labeled with 'Minimal' or 'Mild' content maturity ratings, which have passed Roblox’s ongoing rigorous selection process. Communication (chat) functionality is disabled by default.

- Roblox Select Account (for ages 9–15)
Provides access to games rated up to 'Moderate,' all of which have passed Roblox’s continuous selection process. Chat settings are optimized based on age and region, with additional safety nets maintained to protect all users under 16.

Both accounts share a common evaluation standard: a 'three-tier strict evaluation system' that includes developer identity verification (ID authentication), real-time AI-powered scene assessment, and enhanced content review. As a result, games featuring sensitive themes, social hangouts (social spaces), and free-form drawing functions are fully excluded from the catalog by default.

Additionally, an 'Account Progression' system (automatic transition with age) is implemented, automatically upgrading users from Roblox Kids to Roblox Select at age 9, and from Roblox Select to the standard Roblox account at age 16.

Expansion of Parental Controls

To help parents provide a safer digital environment for their children, Roblox has significantly expanded its parental control features. Parents who link their account with their child’s can now use advanced tools to monitor gameplay history and friend lists in real time, and freely manage content rating restrictions, communication settings, screen time, and monthly spending limits.

With this rollout, the following new and enhanced features are introduced:

- Extended Management Permissions: Specific operational privileges, including detailed game blocking and direct chat management, are extended until the child turns 16.

- Detailed Game Approval Feature: Allows parents to review and individually approve access to specific games that fall outside their child’s default account settings (restriction category).

Takashi Tsunoda, Japan Representative of the Roblox Global Parent Advisory Council, commented:
"In Japan, Roblox is widely recognized among children, yet adult understanding still lags behind. For example, the new 'Roblox Kids' blue screen is a groundbreaking feature that allows parents to intuitively confirm from a distance that their child is in a safe mode. However, this feature is meaningless if parents themselves do not fully understand its specifications. Addressing risks and challenges in the digital environment is an unavoidable necessity for today’s parents. Rather than distancing themselves by viewing Roblox with strong safety measures as merely a game, we hope to explore with families how to proactively use it as an excellent educational tool to jointly cultivate future 'digital safety literacy' together."

Ongoing Commitment to Age-Appropriate 'Safety by Default' Experiences

This new account rollout further advances Roblox’s comprehensive safety strategy, building on its status as the world’s first large-scale online gaming platform to require facial recognition-based age verification for all users accessing chat. After this rollout is complete, users of any age who have not completed age verification will be restricted from accessing the standard Roblox account and using chat features.

Additionally, existing protections that limit sharing of links, images, and videos in chat to prevent personal information leaks and external inducements will continue to apply. While sharing social media links in chat has long been prohibited, starting later this month, 16-and-under users will be fully restricted from sharing or viewing social media links on user profiles, game detail pages, community pages, or the Creator Hub.
