About Cardiac Rehabilitation
Heart diseases, including heart failure, rank as the second leading cause of death in Japan. Among treatments for heart disease, cardiac rehabilitation is known as a crucial therapy alongside pharmacotherapy. Cardiac rehabilitation is a comprehensive program aimed at preventing re-exacerbation, helping patients with heart disease smoothly return to home and social life, and includes exercise therapy, lifestyle guidance, and counseling.
In cardiac rehabilitation, medical professionals prescribe exercise therapy with appropriate load and frequency tailored to each patient, based on data such as blood pressure and electrocardiogram waveforms. Stable effects are said to be achieved by performing this therapy three or more times a week. It is positioned as a Class I recommended treatment in guidelines from Japan, the US, and Europe, and is known to lead to improved patient prognosis and Quality of Life (QOL).
However, the actual implementation rate is low. While cardiac rehabilitation immediately after discharge (late recovery phase) is conducted by visiting medical institutions, one report*¹ indicates that only 7.1% of patients hospitalized for heart failure receive it. Heart failure often involves repeated improvements and deteriorations in symptoms, and approximately 1 to 2 out of 5 patients are re-hospitalized within one year*². As hospitalizations and discharges are repeated, physical strength and mobility tend to gradually decline, making it important to engage in cardiac rehabilitation to prevent recurrence.

Cardiac rehabilitation is covered by insurance for acute myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, post-cardiac surgery, chronic heart failure, large vessel disease, peripheral arterial disease, post-transcatheter aortic valve replacement, and pulmonary hypertension (in principle, for 150 days from the onset date or surgery date)*³. The decision for insurance coverage depends on each patient's pathology and condition, so please consult your primary physician or medical staff.
