Raxus Inc. (Headquarters: Osaka City, Kita Ward / President and CEO: Shojiro Fukushige, hereinafter "the Company") conducted a survey on internships and open companies targeting 300 university and graduate students graduating in 2028 and 2029 who are considering employment at private companies as their first choice or one of their options.
Survey Background
In recent years, with the early start of job hunting activities, some students are becoming conscious of job hunting and career preparation from their first and second years of university. Companies are also increasingly offering internships and open companies as a means to connect with students from an early stage.
On the other hand, while internships and open companies are often seen as opportunities for early selection and preferential treatment in the selection process, it is important for companies to understand what students actually aim for when participating and what information they are seeking.
In particular, students in the early stages of job hunting may not have clearly decided on their desired industries or companies, and they may be trying to determine suitable work and companies by learning about job content, the atmosphere of the people they work with, and how they will work after joining the company.
Therefore, this survey investigated the reasons why university and graduate students graduating in 2028 and 2029, who are considering employment at private companies as their first choice or one of their options, want to participate in internships and open companies, and what they prioritize when choosing where to participate.
Additionally, as supplementary information, we asked about the information that students in the early stages of job hunting seek from agents and career advisors, and explored what kind of support students need in choosing companies and careers.
Survey Summary
- The most common reason for internships among 2028 and 2029 graduates was "To determine suitable work and company," at 20.7%.
- Students who view internships for purposes other than selection, such as "understanding industries and job content," "determining suitable work and company," "grasping the workplace atmosphere," and "job hunting preparation/self-analysis," accounted for 65.5%.
- The most sought-after information during internships was "A typical day's work flow" at 47.8%, followed by "Actual job content" and "Working conditions, holidays, overtime, etc." at 40.5%.
- The primary criterion for choosing an internship destination was "Interest in the job content" at 33.6%, with "Being able to imagine working there" also ranking high at 31.5%.
- In contrast, "Company size and name recognition" accounted for only 14.7%, indicating a tendency to prioritize job content and the image of working over company size.
- The most sought-after information from agents in the early stages of job hunting was "Characteristics of companies that match my personality and aspirations" at 25.7%.
Internship Participation Goals for 2028/2029 Graduates: Most Common Reason is "To Determine Suitable Work and Company" at 20.7%
When students intending to participate in internships or open companies were asked about their closest thoughts regarding these opportunities, "I want to participate to determine suitable work and company" was the most common response at 20.7%. This was followed by "I want to participate to get closer to early selection and job offers" at 19.0%, and "I want to participate for job hunting preparation and self-analysis" at 18.1%.
Furthermore, "I want to participate to understand industries and job content" was 12.5%, and "I want to know about the employees and workplace atmosphere" was 14.2%. "I haven't clearly decided on my participation purpose yet" was also stated by 15.5% of students, indicating a certain degree of variation in the purposes for participating in internships and open companies.
In particular, when combining "to understand industries and job content," "to determine suitable work and company," "to know about the employees and workplace atmosphere," and "for job hunting preparation and self-analysis," students who view internships and open companies for purposes other than selection accounted for 65.5%. This suggests that many students are utilizing internships and open companies not only as opportunities for early selection and job offers but also as a place to determine work and companies that suit them.
What Students Want to Know in Internships: Top Items are "A Typical Day's Work Flow," "Actual Job Content," and "Working Conditions, Holidays, Overtime, etc."
When students intending to participate in internships or open companies were asked what they particularly want to know, "A typical day's work flow" was the most common response at 47.8%. This was followed by "Actual job content" and "Working conditions, holidays, overtime, etc." at 40.5% each, and "Salary and benefits" at 39.2%, and "Employees and workplace atmosphere" at 37.1%.
Additionally, "Work location/relocation" was 29.3%, "Industry characteristics and future prospects" was 25.4%, and "What kind of person is suited for this role" was 25.0%. This shows that interest is gathered not only in job content but also in information related to working conditions, workplace environment, and industry understanding.
In particular, the high ranking of "A typical day's work flow," "Actual job content," and "Working conditions, holidays, overtime, etc." suggests that students want to form a more concrete image of their future work life after joining the company through internships and open companies. Companies are expected to clearly convey actual job content, daily work flow, and the reality of working conditions, not just explain business content and systems.
Criteria for Choosing Internship Destinations: "Interest in Job Content" and "Ease of Imagining Working" Over Company Size
When students intending to participate in internships or open companies were asked what they prioritize when choosing a destination, "Interest in the job content" was the most common response at 33.6%. This was followed by "Being able to imagine working there" and "Matching participation dates" at 31.5% each, and "Interest in the industry" at 31.0%.
Furthermore, "Being able to experience work similar to actual job duties" was 28.9%, and "Ease of participation in terms of location/online options" and "Being able to learn about salary and benefits" were 28.0% each, indicating that ease of participation and the ability to obtain specific information are also prioritized.
On the other hand, "Company size and name recognition" accounted for only 14.7%. "Whether there are preferential selection opportunities" was 21.1%, and "Whether it leads to early selection" was 22.8%. This suggests that students prioritize interest in job content and the image of working after joining the company over selection-related benefits. Companies are expected to design internships and open companies that clearly convey the appeal of the work and the image of working, not just name recognition and selection benefits.
Information Sought from Agents in Early Job Hunting Stages: Most Common is "Characteristics of Companies that Match My Personality and Aspirations"
When asked about information that would be helpful to hear from agents or career advisors in the early stages of job hunting, "Characteristics of companies that match my personality and aspirations" was the most common response at 25.7%. This was followed by "How to find industries that suit me" at 23.3%, "Points to be aware of during selection" at 23.0%, and "Salary and benefits" at 22.7%.
Additionally, "Job hunting schedule and preparation process" was 22.3%, "Work location/relocation" was 20.7%, and "How to choose internships/open companies" and "Nothing in particular" were 20.3% each. This shows information needs unique to the early stages of job hunting, such as how to find suitable industries and companies, and how to choose internships, in addition to selection preparation.
In particular, the fact that "Characteristics of companies that match my personality and aspirations" was the most common response suggests that students in the early stages of job hunting are interested not only in company names and conditions but also in how to find companies that align with their values and aspirations. Agents and career advisors are expected to provide support in choosing industries and companies that match each student's aspirations, in addition to job referrals and selection preparation.

This survey revealed that students graduating in 2028 and 2029 view internships and open companies not only as opportunities for early selection and job offers but also as a chance to determine suitable work and companies. In particular, the fact that "I want to participate to determine suitable work and company" was the most common response, and that over 60% of students view internships for purposes other than selection, is a significant finding for companies.
Furthermore, the fact that "A typical day's work flow," "Actual job content," and "Working conditions, holidays, overtime, etc." were the top items students want to know during internships suggests that students are seeking information that allows them to concretely imagine their work life after joining the company, beyond just company explanations.
In recruitment activities, it is important to carefully convey actual job content, the working styles of young employees, and the workplace atmosphere, in addition to explaining business content and systems.
Going forward, when companies create touchpoints with students, it is necessary to design internships and open companies not only as opportunities that lead to selection but also as a place where students can think about their future with a sense of conviction while comparing it with their own interests and values.
Our company will also continue to provide information and career support so that each student can find work and companies that suit them.
