Luxas Inc. (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Osaka; Representative Director: Seijiro Fukushige; hereafter, "the Company"), which provides the Australian study abroad support service "Mirai Bridge," conducted a survey on study abroad among 3,000 men and women across Japan aged 15 to 39, aiming to clarify the experience of studying abroad, types of study, and key factors for choosing a destination.
Survey Summary - 82.47% have never studied abroad, indicating that among the 15-39 age group, the majority have no experience. - 7.70% have studied abroad for over one month, 6.03% for one week to less than a month, and 3.70% for less than one week. - Regarding the type of study, language study was the most common at 37.67%, followed by vocational school/TAFE (28.11%) and university/graduate school (27.72%). - Popular countries/regions were the U.S. (34.99%), Australia (26.58%), and Canada (18.74%). - Factors highly prioritized when choosing a destination included ease of living (70.75%), quality of education (70.55%), safety (69.41%), and English-speaking environment (66.73%). - Cost-effectiveness was also important to 65.20% of respondents, highlighting the need for reassurance regarding both safety and finances.
82.47% Have Never Studied Abroad When asked about their experience studying abroad, 2,474 people (82.47% of the total) stated they had never done so. Meanwhile, only 7.70% (231 people) had experienced study abroad for more than a month, 6.03% (181 people) for one week to less than a month, and 3.70% (111 people) for one week or less. Even among young people, those who have studied abroad remain in the minority, underscoring the importance of support and information to address anxieties during the deliberation stage.
Language Study is Most Popular; Australia Ranks Highly Among those with experience, language study was the most common at 37.67% (197 people), followed by vocational schools/TAFE (28.11%) and university/graduate studies (27.72%). Other types included working holidays (19.31%), summer schools (15.11%), and exchange programs (13.77%), reflecting diverse goals beyond language improvement, such as skill acquisition and career development. The U.S. was the top destination (34.99%), followed by Australia (26.58%) and Canada (18.74%). Australia ranks highly due to its diverse options for study and work.
Ease of Living and Quality of Education are Key When asked about factors prioritized when selecting a destination, "ease of living" topped the list at 70.75%. This was followed by "quality of school/education" (70.55%), "safety" (69.41%), "English environment" (66.73%), and "affordability" (65.20%). These results demonstrate that students are looking at the overall life experience, not just academic improvement, when selecting where to study.
