Enjoy natural shaved ice with a fluffy texture.

Kyukamura Nikko Yumoto (Location: Yumoto Onsen, Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, Manager: Yasuhiro Watanabe), a resort hotel located on the shores of Lake Yunoko in Okunikko, will begin selling shaved ice made with natural ice on Saturday, July 4th. It will be available for takeout at the hotel.

Natural ice, which is purer and harder to melt than regular ice, can be shaved very thinly and has the characteristic of not causing brain freeze. Please enjoy a special treat during the hot season in Okunikko, a highland resort at an altitude of approximately 1,500m.

◆What is Nikko Natural Ice?

It is ice made by freezing high-quality water, such as spring water, in natural environments like mountainous areas, slowly and naturally by the cold. Utilizing the severe cold of Nikko in winter, it is frozen slowly over a long period of more than two weeks.

The ice grows about 1 cm per day, and it requires work to remove dust and dirt before it is harvested. Once the ice reaches a thickness of 15 cm or more, it is harvested and stored in a storage facility called a 'himuro' (ice house). Sawdust is used around the ice during storage, and this traditional preservation method prevents the ice from melting by absorbing moisture from the surface.

Nikko is known as a place with many shaved ice shops that use natural ice. While there were about 100 himuro nationwide around the early Showa period, there are now only about 5, and 3 of them are located in Nikko City and still produce natural ice.

Kyukamura is increasing the variety of flavors this year due to the great popularity last year, and will offer 5 types of syrup.

● Matcha: Enjoy the elegant taste of bitterness and sweetness.

● Strawberry: (Tochiotome) Luxuriously uses Tochigi Prefecture's "Tochiotome" strawberries.

● Miya Yuzu: Enjoy the refreshing aroma of yuzu.

● Peach: (With fruit pieces) Enjoy the gentle sweetness of the syrup and the fruit pieces.

● Mango: (With fruit pieces) A dish that allows you to enjoy a tropical mood.

*All are served with condensed milk.

◆Okunikko, a Highland Resort

Okunikko, where Kyukamura Nikko Yumoto is located, is at an altitude of approximately 1,500m and is one of the leading highland resorts in the Kanto region. It is also called a "natural air conditioner," and even in midsummer, the temperature is about 5-10°C lower than in Tokyo, with a refreshing breeze blowing through, making it one of Kanto's premier summer resorts. Okunikko is a highland area surrounded by mountains, where the temperature difference between day and night easily creates wind, and the humidity is relatively low, making it feel more refreshing than urban areas even at the same 25°C.

Furthermore, cold water from Mt. Nikko-Shirane flows through Lake Yunoko and Lake Chuzenji in Okunikko Yumoto Onsen and then down to Kegon Falls, so abundant water cools the air in Okunikko. You can experience the ultimate cool-down by bathing in a large amount of negative ions and spray.
