NewClassic Inc. (Setagaya-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Shohei Horiuchi) will hold the ballet performance "POLA presents BALLET TheNewClassic (hereinafter, BTNC)" from Thursday, July 30th to Sunday, August 2nd, 2026, at the New National Theatre, Playhouse. This series reinterprets classical ballet, which has over 400 years of history, by fusing it with contemporary creative elements such as fashion and art. The previous two editions of this series were both sold out, and this will be the third time it is held. Twelve top ballet dancers active on the front lines both in Japan and abroad, including ballet world treasure Shoko Nakamura and globally popular rising star Takumi Miyake, will gather in Tokyo to present 8 evolved works with new casts and creators.
In this performance, classical ballet is boldly reconfigured with contemporary values, expanding its possibilities. For example, 'Coppélia' is given a modern interpretation with a theme of romance with AI, and based on a script actually written by AI, it depicts the boundary between fantasy and reality, program and emotion, on stage. Furthermore, in the famous scene "Rose Adagio" from 'Sleeping Beauty', Shoko Nakamura will dance a role that has conventionally been portrayed as a "16-year-old girl," challenging the stereotype in the ballet world where roles are defined by age.
Additionally, in Act 2, "Ballet LESSON," all 12 dancers will perform, showcasing the fundamentals and techniques of classical ballet, and unleashing their diverse individualities on stage.
The creators gathered for this performance visually embody this worldview. Costumes are handled by KAKAN, a graduate of Central Saint Martins, and mister it., from Maison Martin Margiela. KAKAN designs costumes for Act 1 and all 7 works, drawing inspiration for knit designs from history and art culture, while mister it. brings a light aesthetic to the stage with minimal silhouettes that free the dancers' movements. Furthermore, stylist Tomoko Kojima supervises the costumes of both, creating a consistent worldview on the entire stage that fuses the charm of the dancers' bodies with contemporary fashion.
For lighting and space design, Yuka Hisamatsu, who served as lighting chief at the Netherlands Dance Theatre, has been invited to sharpen the relationship between dancers and space through light, visualizing the essence of each work.
Through the intersection of these diverse creative elements, this performance presents new possibilities for stage art, where the essence of classical ballet resonates with contemporary expression.
